DVD releases' Alterations List at TVShowsonDVD - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Gord Lacey's www.TVShowsonDVD.com has added a new feature called the Alterations List, which tracks the TV DVD sets that are released with changes from the original airings. The idea is that the users "nominate" the shows, and the changes must be verified by five users to make the small but ever-growing list.

More TV sets are being released with altered episodes from their original airings so it's become necessary to start a list in order to track these changes. This list is created by users of the site, and is as good as the information that's added. If you have a set that is altered, please add the change to the site. An alteration doesn't have to be negative; some sets are being released with additional material unseen in the original airing. This list is meant to track alterations of any type. Alterations can be added by clicking on a set under "DVD Releases" and looking near the bottom of the page.

i think it would be good if they added a

and

rating you could vote on, so you can tell right away if the change is good or bad.

Great idea by Gord. 112 Alterered Sets and counting. It's especially bad when they don't list any of the alterations on the packaging.

When I checked this morning, it was at 109.

I own some of those sets, and I thought they were unaltered.

some of the alterations are laughable!

For example, Buffy season 5 is a culprit because the "previously on Buffy The Vampire Slayer" montage of scenes from seasons 1-5 were cut out of the season 5 finale (intended to be a series finale), but the person who complained about it failed to point out that that montage he wanted so badly did find it's way onto the season 7 DVD, and Buffy's the type of show that the fans collect all sets, so he has that montage after all.

I can tell people who are submitting this stuff are too picky! The one under Futurama is stupid and in the audio commentary anyway, so who cares?! Yikes...some of these people aren't very specific either. The 2 for the Simpsons 4 and 5 are very vague.

Oh nice...MFM Season 2 has stuff missing? Boo hiss. I just ordered that.

I really need to check the special features some time. I didn't know season 7 included that.

The only DVDs I own that I consider have alterations is Popular. Almost every song in the episodes are changed to something else. It ruined the ending to the season 2 finale. I'm glad I have that on tape.

I think a few of the episodes are time-compressed, since they only miss about a minute and a half (they're 23 minutes while syndication episodes are 21 or 22 minutes.) I'll have to record the episodes on Goodlife (or whatever the channel is called now) and rent the eps off Netflix and compare to be sure.

it was an easter egg but I found the path to it. Put in disc 7, go to "special features" and then "featurettes", and on your DVD-rom, move your mouse to the left of "the last sundown" and you'll see a cursive B (like the way you see Buffy spelled on the DVD's). Click that and you get the 30 second series (up to season 5) spanning montage that originally aired before "The Gift". With a remote, after you go down to "The Last Sundown", hit the left arrow and you'll once again come across the B.

even though I never watched Popular until DVD, I noticed a lot of that too.

Especially obvious in the episode where Carmen and Ms. Glass are working out to music, and then at the end she makes a comment about always listening to Sheena Easton, and it was definately NOT Sheena Easton's music playing in the scene.

It was nice that Madonna greenlighted use of her music on the show, since there's so many references to her music on the show, that it was great that they got the Music parody and the Nicole Vogue scene entact on DVD.

The list is up to 213 alterations as of this posting.

And while some of the listed alterations may seem picky, for those of us who are television purists, having the complete and uncut broadcasts is a must. Even missing montages, different aspect ratio and other somewhat picky changes are a big deal. Episodes changed or even missing due to music rights is at least understandable, if lamentable, but dropping montages and such is unnecessary. In my mind, that is.

I guess the point is that as long as the information is available, consumers can decide how picky they want to be about dvd sets beforethey buy them.
