i think they wanted roper and furley to be way different from each other, so they probably never even gave it a first thought. it would probably work though. BUT... remember how they gave each character their own little thing. the roper camera smirk, and the furley eye bulge.

It would not work if Furley did the camera mug as well as Roper. Each character had their own different thing, Roper had the camera mug, and like TV DVD Fan mentioned, Furley had the eye bulge. Norman Fell was the only actor the producers allowed to somehow make "contact" with the audience when he played the character of Roper. This is called "breaking the fourth wall". He did this, of course, by doing the famous Roper "camera mug".
