I'm reading my anatomy book, and it says:

Tay-Sachs disease (a disease affecting only the Jewish race)

I thought Judiasm was a religion, not a race.

A fundementilist I once knew said it is a race. This is an issue that actually can get quite heated. For some reason, it mattered a great deal to him to prove to me that Jew is a race.

Seems like your book may be wrong on two accounts, as this indicates it effects more than those of Jewish descent.

While anyone can be a carrier of Tay-Sachs, the incidence of the disease is significantly higher among people of eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish descent. Approximately one in every 27 Jews in the United States is a carrier of the TSD gene. Non-Jewish French Canadians living near the St. Lawrence River and in the Cajun community of Louisiana also have a higher incidence of Tay-Sachs. For the general population, about one in 250 people are carriers.

Funny, years ago when my brother was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, the doctor told my mother than it was only seen in young, Jewish males!!!

Now you hear about Crohn's in the general population all the time.

I would say its a religion and an ethnicity more than a race, but I think they hope to be considered a race. I know they feel that being Jewish is more than just a religion - its part of the striving to get them back to Isarael.
