The ODD explanation for the absence of Fred in the First episode of the spinoff - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Sanford Arms. Aunt Esther told the new owner of Sanford Arms in the first episode that Fred moved to Arizona with Lamont because that area was better for his health. FRED NEVER HAD ANY HEALTH PROBLEMS-lol HUGE Inconsistencxy. That's probably why the show failed QUICKLY.

Actually, I think the show's failure had a bit more to do with ratings, eh?

I was saying that when viewers heard that explanation of where Fred was, they stopped watching which led to horrible ratings.

That show never stood a chance anyway. Fred Sanford is one of the greatest leading sit-com characters of all time, and Redd was at his peak in H-wood. Besides the plots always (almost) centered around his relationship (if you can call it that) w/Lamont and his reactions to Freds getting in and out of trouble. And who cares to see Esther w/o Fred there to bicker with her. That was one spin-off that was destined to go down the drain.

Yeah I agree, A spinoff based on Rollo I think would have had a better chance.

That wouldn't have worked. There was nothing terribly intriguing about Julio except that he was Puerto Rican and Fred was a classic racist. However, Chico got his own show

Having the name "Sanford" in the show's title was a real stretch. I think Fred's illness had to do with the fact that when Redd Foxx realized the decision he'd made to leave the show, he suddenly got real sick.

Yeah I finally saw Sanford Arms. I wish I can find out what the Ratings were for it to be cancelled by NBC after 4 weeks. And I enjoy every episode of Sanford when BET aired the show in 1994

It lasted only 4 weeks? Phew! the show must have been really bad unless they put the show on a bad time slot (like Sunday nights).

Yeah Sanford Arms lasted from Sept of 1977 to Mid October of 1977. On Fridays Nights during the fall of 1977, Sanford Arms had to compete with
Wonder Woman on CBS and Donny and Marie on ABC

Especially if Fred wasnt in it! What the hell was NBC thinking?
