He was the star, so I wonder why Andy Griffith never received an Emmy for his work as Andy Taylor. He was the perfect straight man to Barney's bumbling. I can remember Andy bailing Barney out on many ocassions, but the funny thing was that Andy NEVER said anything. He'd always let Barney take the credit. And Fife would act as if he did something really, really, special.
On the other hand, Don Knotts deserved his five awards. I'm sure he won those as supporting actor, right? Reading the DVD collections, I didn't know that Frances Bavier won an Emmy for Aunt Bee. |

While Don certainly deserved each and every award, Andy was also quite deserving of an Emmy. It is one of the mysteries of Hollywood why he was overlooked!

But Andy is in good company, as my husband Ralph never got an Emmy for his role in The Honeymooners either. That was a shame too. I received the Emmy but Ralph didn't. Take care~ Alice |

Andy deserved an emmy but his problem was that he was surrounded by a great cast and a great Co-Star in Don Knotts. It was easy to overlook him.

Not only did he never win, he was never even nominated for that series. One big reason was that from 1960 to 1966 drama and comedy actors were thrown together in the same category like the academy awards. Dick van Dyke was one of the very few lead comedy actors to get nominated.
As for Don Knotts they must've really liked his work because he was up against actors and actresses from everything from sitcoms to dramatic specials (they had a very strange system in those years). |
