I guess if that episode were produced today, Wally would have come back to the school with a gun and killed a dozen or so people and himself. Then they would have brought in a team of counselors to help everyone else understand why he did it.
Hooray for the "good old days"

I thought that was stupid too. If I were the coach I would have just made him run a few extra laps or something. No way I would take my best runner off the team and increase the schools chances of losing the track meet.

I thought he just wasn't allowed to go to that big track meet out of town? I'm pretty sure he wasn't totally kicked off the team because I remember in the episode Wally said "well, the'll be other track meets"- meaning he WASN'T kicked off the team!

It's supposed to have happend because the coach just made that speech about "if there's any more horsing around on the bus, like at the last meet, the one who starts it is off the team for a week." So, he's the kind of coach that does not put up horseplay, like most of them at that time and many of them, I'm sure, today. The thing is, being on LITB of couse, he had to be one of "honor," not a coach who would let the team star get away with anything just to have him compete to make him (the coach) look good. And Ward, of course, like the honorable parent, sticks up for the coach, and doesn't make threats or offer bribes (money or favors) to get his son reinstated-- although Ward is not always above doing that, such as the 1st season ep "The Paper Route."
As for the severity of the penalty, it is very believable to me. In the 70's a player was kicked off the team for one game or one week for many violations of team rules, including minor ones; especially being late for practice or not on the field at the whistle. But we had an all-district quarterback who punched one of the coaches and he got the same penalty-- suspension for one game. |
