Default Didn't Dwayne and Whitley seem odd for a couple?

I never watched it much to start with, but I really didn't after that. It was more like Joanie and Chachi.

I like Dwayne, but Whitley grated on my nerves so bad. But I can't say he should've been with Denise either (if that would've worked out and things were different on ADW). She was so flaky and empty...pretty girl but never had anything going on up there. And though Dwayne and Freddie had a nice moment at the end of the VSE date-rape episode (which just aired yesterday), that wouldn't have worked either because Kadeem and Cree were a real-life couple.

Then there's Dwayne and Kim...that wouldn't have worked because they were too similar near the end of the show's run...serious and goal-minded.

Sitcoms work with contrasts...hence why Dwayne and Whitley were together.

I thought they were a good couple. The best one in the show. This show had so many pairings - some of which weren't that successful. Walter and Jaleesa and the Gaines were good couples too.

At least I can say that they gradually worked towards getting Dwayne and Whitley together...they didn't force it, like, "oh, Denise is gone, now he is crushing on Whitley." Subtlety works.

They're one of my favorite couples, I think they got together gradually, it's not like they shoved them together in the first season

I love Dwayne and Whitley. I know the show was set up as a star vehicle for Lisa Bonet but to me Dwayne and Whitley were the real stars of the show. I can't picture the show without them.

You probably misread what I meant. I said the same thing, in my own, convoluted and wordy way ...except the part about liking them as a couple. Whitley still grated on my nerves. I did like how things took time to come around. Smart move on the producers' parts. Any other show would've hooked them up immediately...like "Saved by the Bell: The New Class." Any time a girl playing the smart and popular girl left the show, someone who was originally a vapid dummy would take her place and then become the new smart and popular girl...and the new love of the popular guy. Forced.

Yeah I see what you meant, I do seem to be reading things wrong lately

They were a great couple and Whitley was annoying at times(she was the most annoying in Season 1) but I think Dwayne helped her mature alot

I didn't know Kadeem & Cree dated in real life. I think Dwayne & Whitley were a good couple.

Cree and Kadeem dated for awhile. When she put out her cd, she dedicated it to him.

I agree with Sitcom searching for contrast and also in termes of storry telling it's good to have those two peopel comin from different background with very different personnalities... you have to exagerate that to make visible the journey that it takes to actually build a sustainable relationship between one man and one woman... in reality it's hard work, on screen you can only show that hard work by exagerating the differences between the two at the begining... and the good thing about how they told that story is that... it wasn't easy... Dwayne almost lost her... he did actually the only thing Witley was expecting of him when she broke up their first engagement, Step up like a man and be ready to go a long long road with me... he did step up in front of everybody and stole the bride... by the way Dady Gilbet seems actually to smile when his daughter his stollen on the altar by Dwayne... by the way i did not the the engagement dinner party episode but did Dwayne and papa Gilbert had a good interaction?

She as a dislikable character the entire season except ep20 when she saves date with Denise by landing him money and later they humanize her when she tells Dwayne and Denise they are her only friends, the only persons she confide too and that actually sets the premisce for Pookie and Missthang to become confidente for each other...

and yes If Dwayne made Witley mature, she made him mature too, she challenged to pass from a boy to a men... Only Witley could brig that out of him... Kinu was no challenge to Dwayne, Kim, Freedie would not have been a challenge same for Denise... the only person who were challenging Dwayne on this show were Witley and Ron...
