I know this will be a stupid question to most, but I recently bought a dvd recorder and the man behind the counter sold me CD-RW's to use to record on. I recently tried to dub a VHS tape onto DVD and it didn't work. I looked at the disc and it said CD-RW. Is there a difference between CD-RW and DVD-RW? I am assuming that the CD-RW is used for dubbing music and the DVD-rw is for movies and TV and such. Like I said, I know this is a stupid question to all you guys, but I just want to make sure that's the problem why I can't dub anything.

Yes... CD's are generally used for music and DVD's for video. There may be a way to put movies on CD's, but it's likely very complicated. I'd just use DVD's.
