Default Butchering the Episodes

Tonight I compared the DVD version of "The Friendly Physician" to one I recorded off of TBS and found that over 2 1/2 minutes had been cut by the cable channel. I assume this is because of the greater number of commercials they run now compared to when GI was on the air.

Needless to say, when Season 3 on DVD hits the stores in July, my 7-tape collection of episodes recorded from Nick, TVLand, and TBS are going to be erased.

I never got a chance to record "The Friendly Physician' when it was shown here. What was missing from the version you had?

I'm a little paranoid over the cutting of episodes issue and I'm worried that even the DVD's are slightly trimmed.
In "Alergy Time" the Skipper is looking for Gilligan and starts to sneeze and there is a jump to Ginger and Mary Ann finding him. I'm concerned that there is an extended portion of the Skipper finding Gilligan in the cave missing.
Also in "Gilligan's Living Doll" at the end of the episode the robot starts repeating things he heard on the island and mentions 'this is the way we wash our clothes'. I always thought Mary Ann taught him the song somewhere in the episode. As I said it's probably paranoia but I wonder if anyone else feels scenes are still missing from the original screenings.

It took 7 tapes to record 30 episodes? It should be 3 at the most.

Did you record in SP?

I meant that it took me 7 tapes to record the entire series.

But, since they aren't in order on my VHS tapes, each tape has a mix of episodes from all three seasons. That's why I'm waiting for the 3rd season to be released before I erase them. I also taped in SLP/EP.

With regards to the quote above, are you referring to the DVD versions for Allergy Time and Gilligan's Living Doll? The DVD's seem to run anywhere from 25 minutes to 25 minutes 30 seconds. They are presumed to be uncut, but I don't know how you could prove something like that. Each episode does have about 2-2:30 minutes of footage not seen on TV Land or syndicated prints.

TV Land did it to a couple of the third season episodes. In the one with the homing pigeon, they shortened and eventually cut out altogether the scene where the prisoner gets released and says "I'm free....I'm free" over the scene where the castaways are sitting on the beach at the lagoon. They also stopped showing the eppie witht the jet pack.

Default Still got concerns

I was going over the 3rd season (again ) and still can't help think we're not getting the entire original episodes.
Some worries are:
"Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow"
I always thought Ginger tried to boost Gilligan's morale as well.
"Ring Around Gilligan"
The Skipper asking Gilligan to get the sail from the girls and Mr Howell telling the Professor about Gilligan's sudden erratic behaviour (acting like a monkey).
"Take A Dare"
I seem to recall seeing the Skipper threatening Barkley, not just hearing about it.
"The Secret Of Gilligan's Island"
Mr and Mrs Howell being encouraged to follow the rest over the other side of the hill.
I'm really testing the memory banks but I don't know where I'd get these scenes if I didn't think I'd seen them.
There's a couple of second season episodes as well.
I just wish there was some way to confirm if these shows are trimmed or not.

I just wish there was some way to confirm if these shows are trimmed or not.
On Nick @Nite TVLand, these were cut to give some episode examples:

ALLERGY TIME [3/31/66] The scene with the skipper sarcastically saying that even though GilligAn's "a firned of mine...I'd just like to kill him every now and then" (quote in I belEive "Tibby's" signature here)

BEAUTY IS AND BEAUTY DOES [9/23/65]:The buaty contestants (Lovey,Mary Ann & Ginger) tgelling what they'd like for everyone in their speech.

GHOST A GO-GO [3/24/66]: The skipper demonstrating to Gilligan to count up to0 1o by 1's,the whole scene edning with Gilligan telling the girls to bring their "bare essentials";the crew seeing the boat with the dummies off then the Skipper and Gilligan seeing the real ghost when they themselves are dressed as such along with the rest of the castaways.

HAIR TODAY GONE TOMORROW [10/31/66]:The scene of Mary-Ann trying to boost morla of Gilligan by giving him a hair-hat that attract s a woodpecker (it's a coocnut hait-hiat.Ergo the "Coconut pecker" as Gilligan calls 'im.)

LOVEY'S SECRET ADMIRER [1/23/67] The girls trying to find out who the Skippers loves in a charade to solve the mysatery of the title--Courtney/JWoodd's GILLIGAN page quoted this and this was how I already rememebredit..since GInger "threatens" (in jest) to hit Mary Ann--Mary Ann in response:"it'll be the ONlY work you've done since we've BEEN on the island"-obvious why that was takne off.even GILRS hititng girls seemed to be wrong..also the build up about Ginger's sexy prowess with her hips may have done it as well.(Good punch line:
Spoiler: (Highlight this box to see the hidden message.)
Skipper saying he's not INTERESTED in sending MRS.HOWELL a note--------he'd rather write the MOVIE STAR one--Ginger:"Skipper........why DONTCHA write me one?" Good use of Morton Stevens-Gerald Fried-George Wyle "ahh.." tune used iun a lot of these, used in THE SECOND GINGER GRANT [3/3/67] when Ginger bakes a fish pie.

MAN WITH A NET [10/24/66]: The scene of the professor and the butterfly entomologist/.enthusisant (John McGiver) disuissing a caterpillar.

OPERATION: STEAM HEAT [3/10/66]: The scene of the various castaways exzcept,of coruse, the professor trying to bribe Gilligan because he,tyhe Skipper ands the Professor know how to get water right beofre the volacno.(Some good suplots here, the "blowing up" anticipating one of the very last BANG BANG BANGH [4/10/67] and the important Volcano one--along with Sherwood's later BRAYD BUNCH TODAY I AM A FRESHMAN '10/26/72?] (which is about MARCIA but has a BOBBY subplot} this ties the volaci subplot quota.

[BMEET THE METEOR [4/28/66][/B]} The entire
scene with the metal pants, half the scene with the Howells planning the future and their will.

THE FRIENDLY PHYSICIAN [4/7/66]
: The scene "back on Gilligan's Island' when the girls are discussing the mad dco.(Vito Scotti)
.then Mr.Howell telling the others about the doc's daffy plans;then Mr.Howell telling the others about the mad doc's daffy plans;then the Skipper saying to Gilligan as Howell-"Yourre not me little buddy-HE is",then Gilligan ans Howell spinning around-"I resent that Capt."-then the skipper CONFIDING to the Prof.-"It's getting so that I dunno Who anyone is..".

THE HUNTER [1/16/67]: Rory Calhoun as Johnathan Kincaid telling Gillligan that the latte;'s got a fifty fifty chance of where'd he;d get shot, right between the eye sor in the heart followed by Ginger giving the hunter a drink that she spikes but which GIlligan downs (with plenty of the latter-model "Ginger is Sexy and Cool" tenor-saprono sex ; Lovey giving a few words of advice (others remain on Nick@NiteTVLAND) to the hunter's aide,"Ramoo'(Harold Sakata)

THE PRODUCER [10/3/66] : Mary Ann complaining abiout Harold Hecuba's behavior.

V FOR VITAMINS [4/14/66]:The scene with Mr.Howell then Ginger. trying to get Gilligan to give each of them his orange.

:
VOODOO [10/10/66]; The scene with Gilligan running bakc to the communal area with the huts in fear to warn about the Profoessor being a zombie now.

WILL THE REAL MR. HOWELL PLEASE STAND UP? [3/17/66]: The scenes of Mrs.Howlel taking or trying to take a picutre or Thurston Howell III on a raft, the latter telling Gilligan that the deals are off without a impostor to catch but thanks for asking; and the quiz-test to see-ah, as the title implies.(I forgot which other was deleted..)

The color episodes and most, not all are what I noticed difference-wis..

Just a few while larger chunks (in the case of the later,1966-67 ones), wrere done.

I think there may be some film missing..if there's altered openings..

Also, in TV rewruns since the late 1960s at least, the music directors,changed..this may be from the prime time original run but different music directors from John Williams to Gerald Fried were billed in the first season then the latter and Morotn Stevens as wlel though music credits would be shared (these were custom made for the show itself but cues shared..On Big Cartoon Datasbase:GENERAL CARTOON DICUSSIONS: HANNA BARBERA: HB ands GUMBY music cues ther'es a good topic about cross-used music form "John Seely'(Capitol Records executive) and Capitol Library--DONAN RED and MY 3 SONS used that--never used in the ISLAND or the BUNCH--wouldf be odd if it was...Especially in the color ones a cue credited to Gerald Fried would be reused by CBS musical director Mort Stevens later as I might note in another thread..I wonder if credits were changed..yet this continued to the late spring 1967 episodes where credits are otherwise beleivable (1967 dates, the right cast, assisant director Christopher Seiter but it's odd seeing gerald Fried 's name for the most part then all of a sudden in early '67 Morotn Stevens with some of the same cues but an addition to the original Gilligna;'s music library beginning with COURT MARTIAL [1/9/67-broadcast on Bob Denver's 32nd.birthday], then fianlly Fried being credited (though GILLIGAN THE GODDESS [4/17/67] the last-broadcast title, was already finsihed over a half year given the presence of David P.Harmon rather than :Cy Brooskin" in the Associate Producer credits,a 1966 copyrught and no teaser, plkus Sherwood's creator-plain producer creidt,no "producer" credit for anyone else.Plus Chris Seiter hand't signe don yetr as an assisant director as already credited (the previous, BANG! BANG! BANG! [4/10/67] was finsihed after but broadcvast a week ahead--"Seiter","Brooskin",etc.were lsited. How GVerlad Fired was once again credited as music composer-conductor--I got jo idea why GILLIGAN THE GODDESS [4/17/67] was held over--Speicla guest star Stanley Adams died but not till the next decade.]

Sterling Holloway's "I'm free..I;m fre" is over the old stock classic 2nd/3rd. season ending title.I didn;t recall notice this on TVLand or Nick@Nite.
