New Teen Driver Kills Mom While Backing Up

MARLBORO, N.J. A rite of passage for parents and teenagers turned deadly in Monmouth County.

Authorities say a 16-year-old learning to parallel park accidentally hit the accelerator and struck and killed her mother yesterday.

It happened on a quiet street in Marlboro.

Authorities say the girl had a learner's permit. The mother had set up cones and was outside the vehicle trying to guide her daughter.

The 44-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

I'm not one to post news stories like this, but this one really caught my eye. That poor girl will never be the same having to live with her guilt, even though it was an accident. Sad story for all involved.

My guess is that the mother was pinned against another car with a lot of force. When you slam the accelerator, a car can really take off. Such a shame. I wish the mother had stayed in the car.
