Maybe I can help you out here.

The last episode was called "Goodbye Camp Henderson, Hello Sgt. Carter. The episode involves Carter blowing up at Gomer. Gomer fills in for a transfer to be transferred to another base. Carter finds out about the transfer and tears it up. Hence Gomer stays at Camp Henderson. That is about the shortest description I can give you, but it really is a tear-jerking episode. So if you get to watch it, make sure you have a box of kleenex!

-and the reason Sgt.Carter had the transfer rejected was that Corporal Slater reminded him(in flashback scenes)of all the times when Gomer had helped him over the years. This had to have caused Sgt.Carter to realize that Gomer was a friend. As someone else said about something else;"You can't live with him and you can't live without him!"This probably sums up Carter's true feelings about Gomer.

A friend has been trying to convince me that Gomer and Carter ship out to Vietnam in the last episode, but I always knew he couldn't be serious.

TV Guy - No, Gomer and Carter most certainly did not go to 'Nam...but I remember hearing Jim Nabors talk about the show, and he mentioned that they used actual Marines in the opening credits, and Nabors recalled talking to a number of them who told him that they were indeed being shipped out to Nam...Nabors said it was kind of strange watching the opening credits to the show, knowing that some of the real Marines who appear in the film went to Nam and never came back.

Gomer eventually returned to Mayberry and became partners with Goober as shown in the Andy Griffith 1985 reunion.

You must have seen the same show I did tvlandfan. Jim saying that some of the men marching with him in the opening scene were real marines. Many were involved in combat and a few were lost. Brought a tear to my eye. Sad

I taped the fashback scene episode, but during recording it, the darn TV station went off the air for about 45 seconds and messed it up. So if it ever comes back on TV, that will be one I will have to record again. I really enjoyed that episode. Bummer!

Anybody want to know why Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. was cancelled when it was #2 show in the Nielsen Ratings?

CBS cancelled Nabors in 1971, as part of the network’s efforts to modernize its programing and get rid of shows that appealed mainly to poorer, rural audiences.

A final note: Although he was promoted to private first class during the series, Gomer Pyle never received another promotion from the Marine Corps--that is, until August 2001, when Marine Corps General James Jones bestowed upon Gomer (and the 71-year-old Nabors) the title of lance-corporal during a ceremony in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Jim Nabors cancelled the show so he could do the variety show.

I do not remember this episode however, it is nice to know that Duke appeared in it. That would mean that there was someone besides Gomer and Sgt. Carter who appeared in both the first and the last episode. Great show and it does sound moving.

It's a shame too because it look like the show was getting STRONGER and it had just completed it's 5th season. I guess Variety shows was a big thing dring the late 60's

I haven't seen the last episode but I've always wanted to. Unfortunately, season five isn't out yet. So Gomer gets upset because Carter blows up at him and files to transfer...but does Gomer actually really leave?
