why do people feel so compelled to "out" people?

if they aren't willing to say they're gay, why try outting them? Coming out is something you do on your own time, it's not cool to ask "are you gay?" to someone who is still struggling with the idea and are not ready to say they are. Hell, look how old Rosie and Ellen were when they came out, they were both in their very late 30's.

I have to agree with you. What purpose does this serve??? When Melissa Ethridge come out, I was like so what, I like your music I don't care what your personal life is about, just play some kick ass guitar.

If you listen to Janis Ian's song "At Seventeen" it was written by someone who was confused about their sexuality, but it speaks to all of us who have felt awkward in our lifes as teens.

it's kinda rude to be talking about someones sexual orientation when that person isn't ready to deal with what they are. I used to HATE it when people would call me "***" at school, and it was a good 2+ years before I even admitted to myself that I was one. It was NONE OF THEIR GODDAMN BUSINESS to decide if they thought I was a "***" or if they thought I was straight because at that time, I was really confused and questioning myself, and other people trying to out me when I hadn't even outted myself to myself was wrong.

mmhmm...im glad you've just came to grips about your life but the differences is THEY ARE CELEBRITIES...they deal with wayy worse in freakin tabloids...this isnt HIGH SCHOOL kids calling someone a "***" its CELEBS who you think are in the closet so if you wanna make yourself heard about some high school trauma then post in a topic that HAS to do with it, but this relates to my topic HOW? i mean, if you make ANY celebrity jokes, is it not the same? and this topic was not MEANT to offend ANYONE but just DEAL WITH IT. and i guess when i say it than it makes me "rude" or "blunt" but when someone like Jay Leno or Conan says it than it's "funny"? psh...

Still out - saw him with David just recently.

One though that I would like confirmation on, and don't know if anybody could confirm it, but is Herb Alpert gay? My brother for years has claimed he is, but I've never heard anything about it really other than from my bro, and I think he's just trying to bug me (cuz he knows I used to have a huge crush on him). I know he (was, at least) married, not that that means anything, but if anyone could confirm or deny for sure I'd be interested.

I understand what you mean. It must have been hell for you going through that. Its tough enough trying to survive high school at best, and to have that added pressure and stignma on you must have been incredible. My best friend (from grade 4) went through that. Even as early as grade four, people were asking if he was a "girl". I even sat with other friends in the cafeteria in grade 10 listening to a couple of them make smart remarks about him as he passed by. I just couldn't take it any longer and started a huge fight with the ringleader about how it didn't matter one way or another and was none of their GD business . He had never done a thing to her. Oddly enough, it just happened that he finally came out later that year just as his mother was dying of cancer (his father was long out of the picture). Nobody really even made mention of it other than their suspicions were confirmed. (And as you say, it really IS nobody's business). I was really impressed that when his mom died, EVERYBODY from school came to the funeral home or his house to pay their respects. It was almost like the bubble of stress had been burst and they were fine with it. I was always happy that he got to finish the school year on an up note socially at least and that people DID accept him for the great guy he was and not "what" he was.
