Default 5th Beatle Billy Preston to appear at Fest For Beatles Fans

by David Haber, What Goes On Editor

The legendary Billy Preston, called the 5th Beatle by many because he is the only artist other than the Beatles ever credited on a Beatles record, will make a special appearance at the The New York Metro Fest For Beatles Fans 2005, which takes place the weekend of April 8-10, at the NJ Crowne Plaza Meadowlands Hotel.

Preston, who performed on last month's Grammys, and plays on Ray Charles' Record of the Year and Album of the Year, became a favorite Beatles fans' artist because of his work on the Let It Be album, especially his organ solo on the song Get Back.

This convention in April is also special because it is the 100th Fest for Beatles Fans celebration.

Way back on April 28, 1974, Mark Lapidos met with John Lennon and told him his idea for a 10th Anniversary Celebration of The Beatles arrival in America. John responded immediately, "I'm all for it. I'm a Beatles Fan, too." John helped turn Mark's dream into a reality. Mark's first convention, then called Beatlefest, was held in NYC in September, 1974. The Fest is now an annual tradition in New York and in Chicago, plus they have held conventions in 9 other U.S. cities over 31 years.

Beatles fans and vendors from more than 25 States, Japan, Canada, Mexico & England will come together at the Fest. During the Fest there are non-stop Beatles activities in 15 Ballrooms and areas of the Hotel.

Also scheduled to appear are Ringo's Producer Mark Hudson, Beatles Promotions Manager Tony Bramwell (Magical Mystery Tours), Neil Innes (The Rutles and Monty Python), Mark Rivera (Ringo's Musical Director and member of Billy Joel's band), and famous broadcaster Larry Kane (Ticket To Ride)

In addition, just added for Saturday is a rare appearance by acclaimed Beatles Historian Mark Lewisohn, author of many respected Beatles reference works.

Besides the celebrity appearances, perhaps the best part of the Fest is the giant Beatles Marketplace, where the most casual fan or most serious collector can find what they're looking for. There are also auctions, Trivia, an art museum, memorabilia exhibit, photo exhibits and much more.

And make sure you catch the live concerts each evening by Liverpool, The World's Finest Beatles Sound-Alike Band (if they do say so themselves)! Seriously, if you never got a chance to see the Beatles perform live, this is the next-best thing, some might say even better, because you don't have to try and hear them over the screaming!

The convention will be open from 5:00PM till 12:00 Midnight Friday, 12 Noon till 12 Midnight Saturday, and 12 Noon till 10:30PM Sunday. For further information and advance tickets call 1-866-THE FEST or go to www.thefestforbeatlesfans.com. At the Door, tickets are $26.00 for Friday, and $37.00 for Saturday or Sunday.

You hear that sort of thing in a lot of places. That's not my milieu. Rock and roll is good-time music. I love rock. So did my parents.
