Red Sox manager taken to hospital with chest stiffness

NEW YORK (AP) -- Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona was taken to a hospital Wednesday with tightness in his chest, and missed the start of his team's game against the New York Yankees.

Francona, who turns 46 on April 22, said all morning he was not feeling well, according to general manager Theo Epstein. Francona was taken by ambulance to New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, where he has relationships with several doctors.

``He was taken to the hospital for precautionary tests,'' Epstein said. ``He had all his faculties about him, he was just going for tests.''

Bench coach Brad Mills filled in for Francona against New York. Mills, friends with Francona since they were roommates and teammate at the University of Arizona, was with Francona at the stadium Wednesday morning.

``He just felt a little tightness in his chest,'' Mills said. He was a little concerned, there's no doubt. He told me, `Don't worry about me. I'm going to be OK.'''

Epstein spoke to Francona and said he was upbeat.

``He wishes he was at the ballpark,'' he said.

Before the game, Epstein also left the ballpark and went to the hospital to be with Francona.

Francona took the 8 a.m. team bus to Yankee Stadium and began his routine, even fulfilling media obligations despite not feeling well.

Epstein said the Yankees made all of their staff available to Francona. Epstein didn't know what type of testing Francona was undergoing, but Red Sox team doctor Thomas Gill was monitoring his condition by phone from Boston, and team trainer Jim Rowe accompanied the manager to the hospital.

Epstein informed the team about Francona after the second Red Sox bus arrived at the stadium around 10:30 a.m.

``It was scary because you're talking about real-life stuff, you're not talking about wins and losses,'' Boston first baseman Kevin Millar said.

Francona, who led the Red Sox to their first World Series championship in 86 years in his first season as manager, had experienced chest pains before -- a side effect of life-threatening blood clots that developed from a knee operation.

Ten days after knee surgery in 2002, he was in Seattle interviewing for the Mariners' managing job when he experienced severe chest pains.

Upon his return home, Francona said, doctors discovered a blood clot had gone to his lungs. He was given blood thinners and the problem was thought to be under control, but complications developed. He had staph infections in both knees, which required four more operations, he said, and then developed serious hemorrhaging in his leg that ultimately required an additional two operations.

He was sent home after Thanksgiving, but more clotting ensued and he was hospitalized until Christmas Eve. In all, he said, he underwent eight operations to deal with the problem. On more than one occasion, he said, the situation was life-threatening.

Francona played 10 years in the major leagues as a first baseman and outfielder. He had already had 11 knee operations when he went in for the arthroscopic procedure in November 2002.

Francona also managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997-2000.

ESPN reported that George Steinbrenner & Yankees GM Brian Cashman sent Francona a bouqet of flowers & a steak dinner while he's watching the game from the hospital.

That's nice. Not so sure if the steak dinner is such a good idea while having tests for chest pains. Very nice gesture nonetheless.

I think you got this one today Janice. I do not see my Yankees coming back in this game today. Rivera is having a bad day pitching today, it's top of the 9th & the Red Sox are going through their rotation of hitters for the second time in this inning. It got so bad I had to turn the radio off

First of all, this is a dumb a$$ thread because it's only 2 games out of 160 and most importantly the 2 wins don't mean nothing. Also, the Redsox won today on ESPN so should I create another Thread the Yankees may not make the playoffs because they lost today? Damm you are a idiot

Rivera blows save again as Red Sox beat Yankees

Mariano Rivera let another lead slip away against Boston. Alex Rodriguez made a costly error, too, and this time the Yankees couldn't recover. Playing without ailing manager Terry Francona, the Red Sox rallied for five runs against Rivera in the ninth inning and beat New York 7-3 Wednesday to avoid a season-opening sweep.

Francona was taken to a hospital in the morning with tightness in his chest. He was resting there comfortably awaiting test results, the team said during the game. Bench coach Brad Mills filled in for Francona.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter left the game after a pitch by Mike Timlin hit him in the left shoulder and then deflected off his head. Jeter was taken to a hospital for a precautionary CT scan. The results were normal and the shortstop was expected to play Friday night against Baltimore, the Yankees said.

The teams play three more games next week at Fenway Park beginning with Boston's home opener Monday, when the Red Sox will receive their World Series rings.

Rodriguez and Tino Martinez homered for the Yankees, who went ahead in the eighth without a hit. Gary Sheffield drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly.

Rivera entered in the ninth with a 3-2 lead for the second consecutive day, and blew it again. He issued a leadoff walk to Bill Mueller before consecutive singles by Mark Bellhorn and Johnny Damon loaded the bases with none out.

After Trot Nixon struck out, Manny Ramirez hit a routine grounder to Rodriguez at third. He should have been able to get at least a force play at the plate and possibly a game-ending double play, but he bobbled the ball and the tying run scored.

David Ortiz drove in the go-ahead run with a dribbler to the right side, and Edgar Renteria made it 6-3 with a two-run single.

Rivera was lifted after walking Doug Mirabelli and walked off the mound to a smattering of boos. The final run scored on Felix Rodriguez's wild pitch.

Rivera allowed five runs - one earned - and three walks in two-thirds of an inning. He also gave up three hits.

The All-Star closer has blown his last four save chances against the Red Sox, including two in the 2004 playoffs, and six opportunities in all since the start of last season.

He yielded Jason Varitek's tying homer in the ninth on Tuesday, but Jeter bailed out Rivera with a game-winning homer in the bottom half.

Timlin (1-0) got two outs for the win.

The Red Sox got a strong outing from knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who allowed only three hits in 6 2-3 innings - including solo homers by Rodriguez and Martinez.

Making his first start of the year, Mike Mussina gave up nine hits but worked out of trouble all afternoon. Helped by three double plays, he limited the Red Sox to two runs in six innings.

With Kevin Brown on the disabled list, right now Mussina is the lone holdover from last year's rotation.

Kevin Millar's two-run single gave Boston the lead in the fourth.

Rodriguez homered to center in the bottom half, his first of the season. Martinez tied it at 2 when he connected in the fifth, his first since returning to the Yankees.

A fan favorite in New York while winning four World Series titles from 1996-01, Martinez got a huge ovation and popped out of the dugout for a curtain call.

DETROIT -- The substitute starter, for the most part, did his job. Being thrust into his first Major League start of the season, Red Sox right-hander Jeremi Gonzalez had his team locked in a 3-3 tie when he exited following the fifth inning.
But several things went wrong thereafter, as the Tigers tagged Boston relievers Blaine Neal and Alan Embree for five unanswered runs in crunch time, cruising to an 8-3 victory over the Sox.

The momentum the Sox gathered while taking their final two games of a weekend series in Texas swiftly vanished in this one. The relievers were hardly the sole culprits. The Boston bats, with Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman on the ropes in the early innings, couldn't come up with that knockout punch. Detroit's bullpen mowed down the Sox over the final three innings.

Gonzalez got off to a shaky start, as Craig Monroe tagged him for a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the first.

The Red Sox produced their first rally in the top of the third. Johnny Damon got things going with a one-out RBI triple to center. Manny Ramirez tied the game up with an RBI double to center, and David Ortiz gave the Sox their first lead at 3-2 by raking an RBI single to right.

However, that lead didn't last long. Brandon Inge led off Detroit's third with a triple and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Carlos Guillen, knotting things back up at 3-3.

It seemed all but a lock that the Sox were going to go back in front in the top of the fourth after they loaded the bases with nobody out. But Bonderman got nasty, inducing Trot Nixon on a short flyout to left, striking out Ramirez and retiring Ortiz on a grounder to second. The Sox never recovered from that lost opportunity.

Gonzalez, who was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to make the start with David Wells and Curt Schilling both on the disabled list, settled down nicely. He notched seven strikeouts while allowing six hits and three runs over five innings. But the Tigers jumped on Neal in the sixth, taking a 5-3 lead on a two-run homer to right by Carlos Pena. They tagged Embree for three runs in the bottom of the eighth, effectively putting the game out of reach.
