Which is better- 22 episodes consecutively or stretched out? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Since most shows full seasons are 22-26 episodes which is better, to air the episodes more or less uninterrupted from Sep to March or April and then have consecutive reruns (or maybe take the show off altogether and put something else on) or to stretch out the episodes over the 40 or so weeks of the tv season from Sep to the end of May. Most shows do the latter. I kind of prefer the former way, there are less interruptions and whatever you missed the first time you can catch in reruns in the summer. Now a show can repeat an episode a month after it was first shown, which is weird if you don't watch the show regularly and when you do tune in its a rerun of one of the few episodes you've already seen.

That happened to me just last night as a matter of fact, with "Crossing Jordan". I was looking forward to a new episode with Gina Gershon romancing Miguel Ferrer. Instead there was a repeat of one of the few I have seen first-run this season, just a few weeks ago--the one with "Tired of Waiting for You" by the Kinks running through it. Good episode, but I JUST saw it LOL....

So my answer is I wish they would all go back to what I remember from "back in the day" LOL--running all the episodes and then re-running them over the summer. I can understand them maybe wanting to re-run previously highly rated episodes again during sweeps, but April is not a sweeps month!

I think the reason CJ was a repeat last night was last minute. I had *heard* it covered a Nun's murder and it was postponed due to the Pope's death.

I'm picky... I'd like to see new episodes every week September-May.

Shows used to film 39 episodes a season and that actually filled the season from September to May. that would be expensive now, but it would be much better than it is now. The film and filming techniques the use now are too expensive. if the filmed in 35mm Spherical that would allow for more episodes.

I seriously think that shows' quality would diminish if they did 39 episodes a season now. They could afford to do that 39 episode a season thing in the 50s-early 60s because tv was a relatively new medium and there was a lot of ground to be broken. Now, some shows can barely get through 22 shows without being repetitive.

Consecutively, but I think they (the television industry) should shorten the season. The networks have been cutting down the number of episodes that constitutes a season without shortening the actual length of the season. It would not work logistically right now, with the current broadcast mindset, but it really irks me that the networks are using the same standard for season length they were decades ago but keep cutting down the episode order.

I'm going for stretched out because I don't want the season to end in March, that means 6 straight months of repeats till the next season starts

Well I think that TV Shows go 22-26
Hit Sitcoms: 25 Episodes and has just two Episode Between the end of February Sweeps & the Beginning of May Sweeps.
Hit Sitcoms that not a lead in a Timeslot: 24 Epiodes and has Three Episodes Between the end of February Sweeps & the Beginning of May Sweeps.
Sitcoms that have a shot to be canceled: 22 Episodes and Six Episodes Between the end of February Sweeps & the Beginning of May Sweeps.
Cable Shows: Cable Sitcoms Big hit or not can go 10-25 Consecutive Weeks with a New Episode

If you like a new Episode every week from Season Premire to The Season Final without skipping a week go watch a Drama or Cable Series.
If you like network Sitcoms you should be glad that they are repreats right now beacuse it has a good shot to be on next season.
But if you see a New Episode of a Network Sitcom now everyweek if have a got shot at not coming back next year and may end before sweep period beigns.

It happened again last night with "Law & Order SVU"--an episode which has already run twice this season was re-run again last night! Again, a great episode--the one with the "He said, she said" case of a college professor who MAY have raped a student, with a cliffhanger ending that didn't show the verdict. But unless it DID give a verdict this time (I haven't watched this one either time it was re-run), I wonder why it was shown again? Anyone know if it was taking the place of an episode thought to be insensitive to some current event, like with the "Crossing Jordan" episode I mentioned above?

I loved that episode too! Actually, according to my TV Guide, it was scheduled to be on so no new episode was bumped last night. I think there's a new one next week, though.

I'll have to say "consecutively" since the "stretched out" option would involve some unpredictability. I believe reruns should be reserved for the summer.

Wow you guys would really rather have almost 6 straight months of repeats, than the how ever many weeks during the regular season? I sure wouldn't. I don't mind the 3 months over the summer, but 6 months? No thanks
