Default 1983-84 season

Can someone tell me what happened in the last season that forced the show to finshed beyond the top 30? From 1976-83, ODAAT was consistently in the top 20

75-76-#12
76-77-#8
77-78-#10
78-79-#18
79-80-#10
80-81-#11
81-82-#10
82-83-#16
83-84-#????????

So just wondering was the timeslot bad or did the storylines get stale?

I'm not sure where it placed, but I think it was just that the show got stale.

I saw ODAAT went up against Knight Rider and Hardcastle & McCormick on Sunday Nights in 83 but neither of the shows did well in the ratings so I guess the show did get stale.

The show ran its course. Bonnie Franklin stated many times in that season there was a new director during that season, MacKenzie Phillips was back on drugs and was fired and the show was tired. After filming the third episode that season she went to the powers to be and stated that this was her last season. The show was tired. They should had ended at the end of the 82-83 season. The way series ended they could had tie all that in with Ann and Sam getting married and moving to London.

Yeah the girls had become grown women at that point which could also be part of the reason the show was tired
