Sad Tragedy at Navy

Official that collapsed at Georgetown-Navy game dies, game postponed until Sunday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Scott Boyle, the official who collapsed during the Georgetown-Navy game Saturday, has died of an apparent heart attack.

Boyle, who was 55 as indicated by an Annapolis Fire Department statement, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Anne Arundel Medical Center, according to Martha Harlan, director of public relations for the hospital.

Navy's game with Georgetown at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium was suspended after Boyle collapsed between the first and second quarters and was taken to nearby AAMC. Efforts to resuscitate Boyle at the hospital were unsuccessful. An official cause of death is not known at this time.

Boyle, who collapsed while both teams were meeting between quarters, was down for between 10 and 15 minutes before being taken off the field on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance.

Naval Academy Athletic Association officials, assisted by Commander Kevin Ronan, a Navy physician, were treating Boyle for cardiac arrest when paramedics from the Annapolis Fire Department arrived at 1:38 p.m. After using a defribrillator and performing CPR, officials took the highly respected veteran referee to the ambulance, which remained in the stadium until leaving for the hospital at 1:54.

Georgetown coach Dave Urick and Navy coach Richie Meade met with officials for about 10 minutes after Boyle was taken off the field, and Butch West and Andy Motsko, the game's other referees, decided that the game should be suspended.

The game, which Georgetown led 2-0, will be picked up at the start of the second quarter on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Navy's Rip Miller Field. Admission will be free.

"It was pretty obvious that it was pretty serious," Georgetown coach Dave Urick said after the game. "My perspective was that we should put the decision in the officials' hands. This is a lacrosse game and we can finish a lacrosse game any time."

Boyle, a vice president with the Baltimore-area information technology consulting firm CPSI, was married with two children.

Of all the places Boyle refereed lacrosse games, Navy was one of his favorite, according to Mids' assistant coach John Tillman.

"He loved doing games here," Tillman said.
