Default Jake in Progress John Stamos Interview

http://entertainment.excite.com/cele...24_2005_2.html

TV GUIDE INSIDER

Can John Stamos Escape Uncle Jesse?
by Daniel R. Coleridge

TVGuide.com: We have pitted you against Charlie Sheen in our You Sexy Thing! poll. Take a wild guess who's winning.
John Stamos: I don't think that's fair. Charlie's having a tough month. If I'm winning, then I shouldn't be. It's not fair to Charlie. But if Charlie's winning, I'm p---ed!

TVG: Last time we looked, you were beating him 84 percent to 16 percent. A landslide!
Stamos: Charlie's a friend of mine and, obviously, he's going through a bit of a rough time. When a girl leaves you [when she's] six months pregnant, how sexy are you at that point? I've known Denise Richards since she was 18 or 19. They're both really good people. [Pauses] Pit me against Will Ferrell or somebody. Don't pit me against poor Charlie.

TVG: One thing you and Charlie also have in common is...
Stamos: Hookers?

TVG: No, models. You recently said this line on Jake in Progress: "How many vapid, thong-wearing, tantric-sex-loving models with fake tans and butterfly tattoos on the small of their back can I date?" Was that a wink to your real-life model ex, Rebecca Romijn?
Stamos: I shot the pilot right after that relationship ended — like, literally, two weeks. That line had been written [long before], so it was never a dig at her. This guy [Jake] has been down that road and wants some more substance. I'm not saying that women with tattoos on their back don't have substance. A lot of them do! But that had nothing to do with Rebecca.

TVG: You look extra buff. Did you work out before doing this show?
Stamos: I put more thought into my health than the way I looked. When I ended my relationship, I took a couple of months and just decompressed. I spent a lot of time alone, I drank a lot of beer, fished and traveled. I didn't really take care of myself. About six or eight weeks before the show started, I got back into shape. I got on a better eating regimen, I worked out a lot and kayaked every other day on the ocean off Malibu. I'm not buff; I think I'm more skinny. This show is one of the first times I've taken my shirt off on television.

TVG: All of us at TVGuide.com agree that your hair is pretty, too.
Stamos: Why thank you! It's a pretty do.

TVG: It's more grown-up than your rock star-ish Uncle Jesse do from Full House.
Stamos: That was some bad hair in those days. It looked like a Cadillac. People go through bad hairstyles and don't have to be reminded of them everyday in TV syndication like I do. I've grown up. I'm 41 years old. I'm not a kid anymore.

TVG: Do you think you'll ever get away from Uncle Jesse?
Stamos: I'll goof on it, but I'll never bash the show. It was a really good time in my life. That show was really important to a lot of people. It wasn't critically acclaimed like Seinfeld or Friends, but we did big numbers and families still watch it with their kids. So I'm grateful, but it has taken me 10 years to get away from that guy. But I blame no one but myself. I've ducked under the radar to really learn my craft — without sounding too corny &151 and just trying to become a better actor. I've done small stuff like theater and independent movies. That's where my head has been since Full House and I think part of that is helping people to see that I can do more than just that Uncle Jesse guy. Until I give them more, I don't blame 'em.
