The Cave Kids

I never could understand the reasoning behind introducing Fred, Wilma, Betty and Barney as kids with The Flintstone Kids series--leaving aside the fact that the guys supposedly didn't even meet the gals until they all went to work in a hotel in young adulthood. If they had to do a series about cave kids I would have preferred they do one based on...The Cave Kids.

People who read Gold Key comics in the '60s would remember this series. There is a thread about HB cartoons liberally borrowing from other sources (like The Flintstones/Honeymooners), and The Cave Kids would conjure memories of Our Gang. The action for the comics was based in Bedrock, and although Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm made numerous guest appearances, the main characters were all youngsters who were in no way related to The Flintstones or Rubbles (I don't think any of their parents were ever shown, for that matter).

Probably the most prominent character was Rocky Ranger, based on The Lone Ranger (borrowing again!). This pint-sized avenger had his very own cave as headquarters and rode around on the back of Flappy, his Flaposaurus, fighting for truth, justice and the Bedrock Way. Other characters included Buddy Boulder, Sally, Sandy, Sheepy, Suzy Quartz, Gypsy Crystal and Small Stuff.

I'm just wondering if anyone besides me recalls The Cave Kids. I always thought it would have made a great cartoon series--and I believe it would have been better than The Flintstone Kids.

Yes, THE CAVE KIDS was created by the folks at Dell/Gold Key Comics and
never appeared in an animated cartoon. As far as rewriting history on THE
FLINTSTONE KIDS in which Fred and Barney meet the girls while they're all
kids (instead of adults as in the original series' flashback episode), I thought
that was dumb myself. But it happens all the time in the comics (e.g., on the
new WB series SMALLVILLE, Clark Kent is a teenager even though the stories
are obviously set in the present!). You just have to accept those kinds of
anomalies in television and comics, I guess, and enjoy it anyway. (Well, I
like SMALLVILLE anyway; THE FLINTSTONE KIDS didn't do much for me. In
fact, there was a rash of shows like that. Blame it on THE MUPPET BABIES;
they started it.)
