About two weeks ago, we had posted about Porky Pig turns 70. Guess what, we have another birthday this week for fans of Looney Tunes. This week will be 60 years since Sylvester made his debut in "Life With Feathers". To give you the story, Matthew Hunter, our webmaster at Too Looney site explains:
Sylvester the cat was created by Friz Freleng for the 1945 cartoon "Life With Feathers", in which a henpecked lovebird tries to commit suicide by having Sylvester eat him. The cat's very first words were "Thufferin' Thuccotash", uttered again and again throughout the cat's career. Sylvester was designed to look like a clown, explaining the big red nose and low crotch, designed to look like a clown nose and baggy pants. The voice was that of Mel Blanc as Daffy Duck, only not sped up. In 1947, Sylvester was paired with an infamous character created by Bob Clampett, named Tweety Bird. In the first pairing, a cartoon called "Tweetie Pie", once again directed by Freleng, Sylvester is a jealous housecat, trying to eat Tweety, a concept which would continue for countless cartoons. The short won WB animation its first Academy Award, and instantly the characters were a perfect team. Later the series would introduce audiences to Granny, Tweety's owner, and Hector, Tweety's bulldog bodyguard. Producer of the studio at the time, Edward Selzer, had suggested that Friz Frelelng not use Tweety but instead start using the little woodpecker from the earlier Sylvester solo cartoon "Peck Up You Troubles" (1945) as Sylvester's chief nemesis. Selzer was notorious for having no sense of humor or funny ideas, so Freleng decided that Tweety had to be the right character. However, aside from the tweety series, Sylvester was one of the most versatile characters in Warner Bros. cartoons, starring in many other cartoons without Tweety. I think that I found this picture from our website. It was Sylvester's first cartoon. To me, Sylvester was way behind Tom of Tom & Jerry. I have a Sylvester shirt in my dresser. I like him better than Tom.![]() ![]() |

Gilligan Fanatic, In honor of his 60th birthday of Sylvester, I found this clip from this website. It was from "Press Your Luck". It was the Sylvester episode in which Peter Tomarkin answered the question "What was the cartoon character best known for saying 'Suffer'n Succotash'?" All three contestants answered Sylvester and Peter's responsed was Daffy Duck was the correct answer. All three of them got wrong. Towards the end of the show, Peter called Sylvester on the phone discussing the mistake that the answer got wrong. It featured cameos by Speedy Gonzalez and Porky Pig (the character who had turned 70 two weeks ago) as spoken on the telephone. That was a funny episode. I hope Gilligan Fanatic will post it on the "Termite Terrance Trading Post". Here is that clip:
