Sore Barry Bonds Says He Might Miss Entire Season The most patient man in baseball may have finally hit his limit. Barry Bonds, baseball’s all-time walks champ, said yesterday that he might be finished for the season because of his troubled knee, and would not return before midseason at the earliest. Walking with the aid of crutches at the Giants’ Scottsdale, Ariz., training camp, he also sounded like the weight of a federal investigation into possible perjury and tax evasion charges, along with claims by a California woman that she was his mistress for 10 years, had beaten him down. “You wanted me to jump off the bridge; I finally have jumped. You wanted the bring me down, you’ve finally brought me and my family down. Finally done it,” he told reporters. “From everybody, all of you. So now go pick a different person.” Bonds did not address any of the issues facing him, other than Thursday’s knee surgery, his third in the last four months. Bonds made headlines when he arrived at camp last month and dismissed reports that he told the BALCO grand jury that he inadvertently used anabolic steroids, hoping to put the issue aside. But since then a Bay Area woman named Kimberly Bell has come forward to say that she not only was Bonds’ mistress, but that he admitted using steroids in 2000 and had given her $80,000 in cash from memorabilia sales that she used to buy a house. Bell appeared before the BALCO grand jury Thursday, the same day Bonds was having surgery, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, which cited unidentified sources. Congressional and MLB sources told the Daily News last week that Bonds was the subject of an investigation into possible perjury charges over his BALCO testimony. Yesterday, with his 15-year-old son Nikolai sitting next to him, Bonds said, “My son and I are just going to enjoy our lives. You guys wanted to hurt me bad enough, you finally got me. I’m mentally drained. I’m tired of my kids crying.” Original copy |

It is kind of a coincidence that Bonds has decided to go into "retirement" right after the steroid hearings last week...
