I wonder why the producers/writers gave Betty such a character that is kinda 'slow'

I think Betty wasd perfect for the role! Even though she is very intelligent in real life, ahe plays the part perfectly. Rue McClanahan was once decsribing the blank, empty look that Betty can have.

It was Betty's own choice. She was originally scheduled to play Blanche because everyone knew her from The Mary Tyler Moore Show where she had played a Blanche-type. Betty wanted to break away from that and play Rose, so she and Rue switched parts. Hope that helps!

I love the episode when Rose starts to pray in the middle of the night!
Rose: (Praying)
Dorothy's Voice: Thanks for the lovely prayer Rose.
Rose: (A weird look on her face)
Dorothy's Voice: Now shut up and go to sleep!
Rose: (Hurries into bed)
Blanche: Thanks Dorothy
Dorothy: It wasn't me.
Blanche: (Frightened) Oh sweet Jesus!

That cracks me up everytime!!!
