Im going down on Wednesday to get fitted for a bridesmaid gown (which sucks because Im losing weight and the wedding aint til the end of the year so Ill have to get it re-altered), and I was wondering how much I should expect to spend? I was told to bring money and ugh I forgot to ask how much itd be and I have no idea how much these things cost.

Yeah - depends on the bride's tastes/expectations and all. Do you know what she usually spends on her regular clothes (i.e. - does she go for designer stuff)? Is there any way you can just call her and ask directly? Can't see she would be offended. Or, if you know the name of the store and if they've already been decided on, they could tell you exactly. I agree though - be prepared for anything from $250 to even $600. Mention to them too, that you are losing weight! Have fun!

I bought a bridesmaid dress for the Military Ball last year... it was Jessica McClintock. It was $265 but on sale... so I paid somewhere between $200-$225 for it. I forgot.

Reason #126 it's great to be a guy: You plop down a small-ish [compared to THOSE numbers] amount of money, rent a tux for a couple of days for whatever occasion might spring up, and then send it back.
And even if we need to buy one due to attending formal events often, they're by and large still cheaper than dresses. <Nelson> Ha Ha </Nelson>

I've been in my share of weddings. They're a lot of fun, but very expensive. Dress, shoes, salon, wedding shower, shower gift, bachelorette party, wedding gift...lots of money.

Supposedly the tradition always was that if the bride insisted on a certain type or design, she would foot the bill and if she left it more to the bridesmaids then they would pay themselves. About the last 15 years though the bridesmaids seem to get stuck with the whole thing regardless - dress, shoes, salon (although many brides will pickup hairdressing/makeup tabs) - yeah - and gift! Gets really pricey and worse if your the maid/matron of honor - you're expected to host a bridal shower. The bride should still get a gift for them though - and the more they're expected to spend, then usually the gift from the bride reflects that too. For my brother's wedding, I got stuck paying $250 for a homemade, ill-fitting dress that I ended up using as a Halloween costume going as Shirley Temple (if that gives you any idea of how BAD this thing was)! The jewelry (necklace and matching earrings) fell apart at the reception. Just elope - or live together!! Better spent towards a honeymoon to remember or the house I say!

OMG 500 dollars? Dude I would say screw you unless they're paying. That's freaking ridiculous. I will never have some big fancy wedding. Who needs all that crap?

i don't want a big fancy wedding...
how do you ask someone to be your bridesmaid, and then expect them to pay for their own dress? that doesn't make any sense to me. |
