Default What did you give up for Lent?

Seeing that it's one week before Easter, if you practice Lent, what did you give up for a month, if you may want to share?

For myself, I gave up wildebeest hunting.

I gave up sweets. At first I thought I couldn't do it because I'm addicted to junk food but I'm glad I went ahead with it. I feel alot better and I lost weight. And I'm ecspecially glad I stuck to my promise because this year I'm making Confirmation.

I gave up all carbonated soft drinks. I slipped once - I bought a Diet Coke at a fast food restaurant with my lunch. Ironically, I was eating a fish sandwich because it was Friday!

Okay that's what I thought. Does that mean that a huge percentage of the population is Catholic? Because I swear I hear so many people talking about Lent.

Lent is a Christian holiday primarily. I believe Catholics celebrate it as well, but I'm not positive. (Here I'm referring to Protestant Christians and Roman Catholics, and yes, there's a big difference.) I shouldn't even say holiday because it's more of a time period right before Easter. It's the month before Easter and it starts with Ash Wednesday in February, generally the first Wednesday of the month if I'm not mistaken. It's basically a time to put off things that distract you from spending time reading the Bible and praying to God. Many people choose to give up one thing in particular that is a favorite passion that may become in front of God if not kept in check.
For example, for someone who chose to give up watching television, they should spend the extra time focusing on God and studying His Word and praying. It's really a time to get closer to God and prepare your heart for Easter. And the Lenten period ends at Easter. Generally, churches have a Good Friday service (commemorating the day Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary) and some have a Maundy Thursday service. (This is the day before Good Friday. Thursday night is the night Jesus had the Last Supper with His disciples and also gave the famous Olivet Discourse.) And then most churches have an early morning celebration worship service on Easter Sunday morning when we as Christians (I say we because I am one! ) celebrate the day Jesus rose again from the dead. He is alive forevermore and through His death and resurrection He has provided forgiveness for everyone's sins. His death paid the price of sin, which the Bible says is death in Romans 6:23 But by accepting His forgiveness and asking Him to be your Lord, Jesus offers eternal life with Him in Heaven. If you want to know more, post on the board or better yet, read the Gospel of John. (http://www.Biblegateway.com - you can read the whole Bible online there! also check out http://www.godssimpleplan.org/gsps-english.html)

And to answer the original question, our church generally doesn't really celebrate Lent as such (not all Christian churches do), but we do have a Good Friday and Easter Sunday morning service. So I don't really have anything I give up for Lent, but I do strive all the time to focus on God more and less on myself. It's something all Christians work on all the time.

I could be wrong maybe all Christians practice it? I don't know but I just know that I'm Catholic and everyone I know who is Catholic has heard of it. Some of my friends who are Protestant haven't heard of Lent though.
