Default Remember This Case?

I posted this on another thread, but does anybody remember the case involving the man who pulled into his parking space at his job, and right when he opened his car door was shot and killed? I believe he worked for a contractor or software firm in California.

What was so bizarre about this case was that there were several workers in their cars waiting to go to work, but nobody saw anything. The company had surveillance cameras in the parking lot, but somehow this guys parking space was in a blind spot. The cameras did record a car earlier that was following other cars around the parking lot. This was a really creepy case.

Does anybody remember this one?

Yes. His name was Matt Flores, and he was 26, fresh out of the army, and was in the first few days of a new job at Applied Materials in Silicon Valley as an engineer. They showed home videos of his baby daughter. It was a very sad case and scary. Applied Materials, at the time, was still offering $100,000 as a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer. A theory in the segment was that he was killed due to mistaken identity.

Silicon Valley. That's in my area! What city did it take place in? I only recall that the broadcast was in late 1995 around nov/dec but what was the date of the killing?

Thanks for the info! I do seem to remember that the police had gone through possible motives for the killing, but couldnt come up with one except for mistaken identity. Just remembering that surveillance video of the car "stalking" the other cars, before Matt was killed, was chilling.

Default Likely it was a contract killing

similar to the Bruce Johnson case on the "Bizarre Murders" dvd where the intended hit target was Don Deveroux. There was an update on this awhile

back - Matt's daughter has grown up and is almost a teenager - They have dedicated a wing of a local university I believe in Matt's name - his killer still remains at large and the theory of a botched contract killing still looms large as the probable theory as to what happened to Matt Flores - The whole scene was just too perfect and too neat to be a random act of violence or even someone who was not a professional marksman wanting to murder Matt Flores - Unfortunatley contract killings are usually very hard to solve as the person who does that job obviously does not talk turkey (unless he is a moron like the guy who killed TK Hardy) due to the fact that they likely are responsible for dozens of these types of crimes.

The key to solving this is to find out who was the intended victim of the hit if possible? - Maybe the police have some leads I dunno.

Later.

I noticed the similarities between the Don Deveroux mistake hit and Matt's case. What stuck in my mind was the sheer brazeness of Matt's murder. I would think a contract killer would pick a better time to make his/her hit, like at night, than mid-morning. Especially when the parking lot contained so many potential witnesses.

It was just dumb luck that nobody was paying attention that morning in their cars, to their surroundings. You would think that someone would have noticed the killer running to his car after Matt was killed. The part about the surveillance cameras just not reaching that part of the parking lot is also frustrating. It makes me wonder who the target could've been for the killer to take so many chances.

I'm glad to hear about the update, but share in your pessimism about the police finding the suspect(s).

Unfortunately I can't remember the city. The employee who was closest, and the one who discovered the body, was across from Matt's car. At the time she heard the shot, she was listening to the end of a talk radio show and was not paying attention to what was happening behind her. The lack of video and witnesses was due to bad luck.
