OMG I just turned on the radio to listen to my favorite classic rock station, and it is no longer there. No classic rock!? I'm dying. This is really the only station that I listen to in the car. Is nothing sacred anymore?????
I HATE CHANGE!!!!!

I read some bad news about rock stations in Rolling Stone last weekend, many of them back east are dropping their rock formats for HIP HOP??
What is up in this country where you can't get a decent rock and roll station?? L.A. used to be a haven for rock stations, it blew Tender Chunks when they dropped KNAC for a Spanish format.Rock and roll is being phased out!! BRING IT BACK!! We need a rock and roll revolution in this country.

L.A. is still a rock and roll town, I don't know what is going on. I'm hoping that another station is going to pop up somewhere. Now I have to listen via the internet to KFOG or The Bone in San Francisco. I guess that is why there is satillite radio. |

KCBS-FM 93.1 in L.A. at 5pm Thursday made the switch to "Jack FM." The format is very big in Canada (called either Jack or Bob) and has made some inroads in U.S. markets as well, going to #1 in Portland ME in one book (where it's called Frank). L.A. had two competing classic rock stations anyway, KCBS-FM which was more pop-leaning and ABC-owned KLOS, the home of Mark & Brian's morning show and harder edged. Both stations are ranked around #20. The Jack format is a cross between classic hits and hot AC, plays virtually no current songs and draws an audience of 30+, men and women equally. Most songs are uptempo and familiar, rock-oriented but also including some dance/new wave things like Duran Duran and B52s. It reminds me of Larry Berger's Rock 'n Stereo WPLJ days where a set of music might include The Stones, Carly Simon, The BeeGees, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac. Right now, the station is running without DJs, including morning host Jonathan Brandmeier who briefly had a late night TV talk show in the 90s. No word on whether any of them will return. If Infinity has success with this format in LA, could it come here if WNEW doesn't improve... or K-Rock drops like a rock after Stern's departure? Maybe. The Jack/Bob/Frank format is very white with virtually no urban or R&B music included. But if it makes inroads in LA, who knows? Or might a NYC version include some Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as Larry Berger used to include on PLJ? In New York City, we got Q-104 and K-Rock and in the Hudson Valley area like Poughkeepsie, we got WPDH, WRRV and WDST. As I said, Arrow 93.1 dropped its rock format to Jack. It's like WNEW did in 1999 where they dropped rock in favor of hot talk. But now, WNEW had problems for many years which now plays some types of mambo jambo music. Go back to July 1st, 2004. It was 12:00 PM noon, Wild 100.3 changed its format to Jack-FM. The station is having more Jack-FM then any other radio station in the world. Here is the clip: Wild 100.3 becomes Jack-FM |

From Radio & Records:
'Arrow' Fired, 'Jack' Hired After 11 1/2 years as "Arrow 93.1," Infinity Classic Rocker KCBS-FM/Los Angeles has flipped to an eclectic Adult Hits presentation as "93.1 Jack FM." Promising to "play what we want," KCBS-FM takes on an unconventional format that mixes hits from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and the last five years. Core artists include the Rolling Stones, Prince, U2, Aerosmith, No Doubt, Tom Petty, Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Cure and Dave Matthews Band. The station's first song: "Whip It" by Devo. SVP/Programming Kevin Weatherly will be directly overseeing the station's relaunch. Originally called "Arrow 93," KCBS-FM was the first station to air "All Rock & Roll Oldies," sparking a rise in "Arrow" sign-ons and format flips to Classic Hits throughout the U.S. during the mid-1990s. There is a new station (well about 4 months old) that plays '50s and '60s music.
AM KSUR Oldies 540 and 1260. From Beverly Hills. This is another format which has been needed- KEARTH (KRTH 101.1 FM) does not play enough '50s/early '60s and they play way too much Motown. |
