'DESPERATE' MAN

With his wife Erin expecting their second child this month, "Desperate Housewives" hunk James Denton isn't getting much in the way of down time in the near future. Denton, who joined his cast mates Eva Longoria and Teri Hatcher Sunday night at the annual TV Land Awards (airing at 8 p.m. today), reports the "Desperate" team's seasonal hiatus has been cut by several weeks.

That's because "we're going to go do international press, and they're bringing us back early because they want to add more episodes."

He's not complaining, though. "Because we're not kids, we get how lucky we are. It gives me a little bit of security because I could get killed off, but somebody may want me now that I've been on 'Desperate Housewives."'

The mega hit was honored along with the beloved "Carol Burnett Show," "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Soul Train."

I hope that's true... nothing has annoyed me more this season than the constant pre-emptions(repeats are fine), but no show at all is worse.

That'd be really cool! The repeats are way, way too annoying. But how many episodes could they realistically make in a single season?

As many as they want

Last season they ordered 30 episodes for My Wife & Kids (though that's a sitcom...)

Dallas and some of the other soaps like Melrose place and 90210 sometimes had 28 or 29 episodes in a season.

I think 28-29 would probably be the most... and that might be a little bit of a stretch. Anything is possible though.

I love the idea of more episodes. Just think.... possibly over 50 in less than 2 years.

yea it most likely will be probably around 25 or so. The reason those other shows had so much was because the networks didn't air reruns of them.

Also... if the show stays on Sunday(I don't see why not), then pre-emptions due to the Oscars and the Academy Awards would affect it to, not to mention a couple of movies(like the Oprah one).

Those are rare exceptions. If DH could air as many episodes as possible.... I doubt it would be pre-empted for EM:HE episodes, or a preview of a new show.

ABC should've aired JIP after a new DH.... that's what makes the night.

That's what I said. Only pre-empt for award shows or REALLY special movies(nothing recycled). ABC has the Super Bowl next year too...

And I doubt DH would be the show to air after the Superbowl. I think the best bet would be either a new series, or a pair of sitcoms.

It has to do with money. the shows back then could do more episodes in one season. I looked up episode orders for dramas and found out between seasons 6 and 11 Knots Landing CBS ordered 29 episodes in each season. Melrose Place had 32 or 33 episodes per season. 90210 had an average of 31 episodes. Dallas had 29 episodes in seasons 7 and 8 and 30 in season 9.

Shows were also longer then... now an hour long show has 17-18 minutes worth the commericals. Absolutely ridiclous.

I think 30 could be a limit, that would mean less reruns in a season. I think 30 is kind of high for a drama nowadays. I think 25-28 would be good too
