I can't believe "You Light Up My Life" spent ten weeks atop the U.S. singles charts, becoming the decade's biggest U.S. single! In Britain, that honor went to Paul McCartney and Wings's' "Mull of Kintyre" - also from 1977 - which dominated the number one spot there that year! That's a much better song, but its Celtic arrangement, with bagpipes and all, convinced Capitol not to promote it here because they though "ethinc music" wouldn't sell. And so, "Mull of Kintyre" never even cracked the Top Forty here.
Note to my fellow Irish-Americans on the eve of Saint Patrick's Day - We let a great Celtic song from Paul McCartney stay off the charts for a whitebread ballad instead! Time to remember our roots - we can't let something like that happen again!
