Default More dumb TV network ideas

If you think ABC is being a little unfair in the way they're treating their "Housewives", wait until you read the following story. In Canada, the series is being carried by the CTV network. It just so happens that CTV also has the rights to show this year's Juno Awards, which are Canada's version of the Grammys. The awards will be aired on Sunday, April 3rd, with the pre-requisite pre-award interview/schmoozefest show starting at 7:00 pm, the same time that CTV also plans to show an episode of "Desperate Housewives". How is this possible, you ask? The following column from the Toronto Sun explains it all:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

CTV adopts 'Desperate' ratings measures

By BILL BRIOUX -- Toronto Sun

More news 'n' notes from the week on TV:

DESPERATE PLOY: In the most naked ratings grab since that Oscar streaker, CTV plans to "supersize" their Juno Award red carpet coverage by somehow combining it with an episode of Desperate Housewives.

How will this work? Tune in to CTV April 3 at 7 p.m. and there (two hours earlier than on ABC) are the girls of Wisteria Lane. Before the commercial break, cut to Ben Mulroney in Winnipeg, talking to Trooper. A few commercials (and Instant Star plugs) later and back to Teri Hatcher chatting up some hunky carpenter. Five minutes in, cut to Tanya Kim asking Randy Bachman what he is wearing.

This will go on for 90 minutes. Look for CTV to start editing scenes from Degrassi into CSI next.

The ploy will allow CTV to claim 2.5 million viewers for their Juno red carpet coverage plus give The Junos a boost in an off music year. Brilliant, unless you just want to watch Desperate Housewives.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I've heard some really dumb schemes by networks just for the sake of grabbing a few extra ratings points but this one tops them all. What do you think?

LOL, which is what most people will do.

That's just plain stupid.

It's actually a very smart idea, but I would hate it.

Here's an update on the story I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. It sounded like a dumb idea then and it seems even more idiotic now. We'll have to wait until tomorrow night to see what it's all about. If I were you, I'd follow the advice in the last paragraph.
