It seemed the main reason that Lumpy did so poorly in school and bullied Beaver and his friends was that Fred, his father was too rough on him. Even though Fred was Ward's best friend and co-worker, did you think he was too rough on Lumpy?

I agree. He made Lumpy feel so lousy and no good at home that the only way Lumpy could feel any better was to go bully other people.

I agree with both of you. While Ward could be tough with the boys, he always did it in the right way and was fair about it. And if it turned out he was wrong, he apologized to them. Fred was just verbally abusive to Lumpy, always calling him stupid and a boob and acting like he could never do anything right. No wonder Lumpy didn't amount to much in school and in social relationships.
But on the flip side, Fred always bragged about Clarence and made it seem like his son was the greatest kid in the world. Go figure! |

Lumpy deserved to be put down. He was such a loser and not a good person. If you asked me, Fred Rutherford was too easy on him. Remember the episode where Lumpy played a joke on Wally and Eddie's cars? If I was Lumpy's father, I would have called him every name in the book from fat to dumb.

So sad. I'll never understand why the writers and producers didn't give Wally at least one really good friend. I always thought Chester could have been Wally's best friend but he dropped out of the series early. It's just amazing that Wally was stuck with the likes of Eddie, Tooey, and Lumpy for friends.

We probably wouldn't feel this way if Wally and Beaver were more normal about getting into the same kind of trouble that a teenage usually gets into. Let's face it, the trouble they got into was harmless and provoked by these guys and Wally was just way too nice for his own good. I think the writers should have been more realistic in this area. That is where the controversail subjects would have came into play beautifully. Normal teenage crap like underage drinking and stuff like that. A good example would have been to have Wally get into trouble with that one group of boys (name of group escapes me at the moment) but they went to the leaders house to drink beer and play pool, same thing could have happened when he was dealing with that older girl. I'm sure you all catch my drift. If they would have put both the boys in more dire situations, they would have given June more of a reason to worry and then we would have seen her fall apart at the seams!

I think Fred was a terrible father to Lumpy. The things Lumpy did were because of Fred. Lumpy always seemed to be looking for Fred's approval and never getting it. I think it makes a lot of sense that Fred bragged about Lumpy to other people while not really liking him. A father like Fred would do that. Fred really believed that Lumpy was a loser and he believed that made Fred look bad, so he had to make up all that stuff.
Wally never hit Eddie because he understood Eddie. He told Beaver that punching a guy like Eddie wouldn't do anything to make Eddie change, but calling Eddie a few names might make Eddie stop and wonder if he deserved to be called those names. This was so clearly true. Eddie did a lot of things to possibly end the friendship, but he also worried about the friendship ending whenever he realized that he might have gone too far. Wally calling him names would have upset Eddie a lot more than if Wally had punched him. Also, whenever Eddie thinks that Wally might actually hit him, he does something to make it clear that he doesn't want to fight. Wally also always knew better than to go down to Eddie's level, so it just makes sense that he would have known better than to go down to an even worse level. |

one of my fave episodes ever was when ward told the boys an old anecdote about dealing with bullies and then fred stepped on the barrel hoops meant for lumpy--classic, maybe my fave ever ... I still laff when thinking about the beav and wally crouching in the dark behind some bushes and taunting lumpy with some vitage 50s "caps" ... that said, Fred was about as aware as another Fred [(Flintstone)--about anything other than bronto burgers)] in regard to parenting
