It is about a loving husband and father who just so happens to allow his newly kicked-out niece come and live with his family. Ray Romano plays Mitch Carlson, the husband, father, and uncle. Mitch works as a sports writer for a famous sports magazine. Mitch and his wife, Cheryl Carlson (Faith Ford) have been happily married for 20 years now. Cheryl is a department store manager. Mitch and Cheryl have three children: Hailey Carlson, 18 (Hailey Duff), Nicole Carlson, 17 (Hilary Duff), and Tyler Carlson, 17 (Martin Spanjers). Tyler and Nicole are fraternal twins. Tyler is 2 minutes older than Nicole. Dispite the fact that they look nothing alike, they are actual twins. Mitch's 19 year old slightly rebellious niece, Alex Carlson (Olivia Wilde) moves in with them, after being kicked out by her parents. Tyler's girlfriend/Nicole's best friend, Sarah Clineman (Hayden Panettiere) hangs out with Tyler and Nicole quite often. Cheryl's co-worker and best friend is Pam Mason (Katey Sagal). Mitch works with his childhood best friend, Scott Miller (Woody Harrelson).
