I Have A Learning Disability & I Need Help - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I discovered i have this problem when i realized i can't figure things out on my own & i can't remember things that i read pertaining to school. Whenever i try to read school books, my brain goes blank & i can't remember what i studied. The same thing happens when a boss on a job tries to show me what to do & i can't do the job on my own. For example, if a boss was to train me on how to drive a towmotor at a warehouse or a factory, i would automatically give up & tell myself that i can't do it. I don't know why that is but that's the way i think. I remember a boss tried to show me how to work a cardboard box machine & he showed me how to tie up the boxes with metal wires & i couldn't do it right. I don't know how to change a flat tire even though my father has showed me how to do it lots of times. I'm scared to death that i'm gonna end up homeless cause i can't take care of myself. I've never had a full time job & when i do get a job, i can't keep it most of the time cause i'll end up gettin fired. I'm having a hard time finding a full time job right now. I'm workin 2 part time jobs now & i wanna quit my daytime job real bad but it's been tough to find a job. I'm scared to go back to school to learn a trade cause i know i suck at studying & taking tests. Only thing i'm good at is cleaning jobs & i don't wanna do that the rest of my life. Who in the hell wants to clean toilets for a living? I'll probably never get my own place cause i can't get a full time job & i can't keep a job unless it's cleaning. I can't even get a job at Burger King. I applied there once & i got interviewed but i never got a call back. I wanted to ask ya'll is there a way i can get a check monthly from the government for this learning disability i believe i have?

I found some information today on the internet about adults with attention deficit disorder. I saw a 1-800 number that i'm gonna call to see if i can get help. I need to see a psychiatrist but i don't have health insurance so i wouldn't be able to afford to pay a psychiatrist. I'm very depressed right now cause i really want a full time job that i would enjoy doing & i wanna be on my own. I wanna educate myself & be able to figure things out on my own but it's very hard for me cause my attention span is bad. When i read, my brain be thinkin about somethin else & i'm tired of that happening to me. It's almost like i can't control it. I don't like tellin people my business but i just wanted some suggestions from ya'll about what i should do cause ya'll seem like cool people on here to talk to. My parents & my brother don't believe that i have a learning disability cause they say i can remember things about entertainment so i should be able to remember things about school & figuring things out.

It's possible that you do have adult ADD. I was diagnosed with it when I was six years old. I took Ritalin from age six to thirteen. The only problem I've ever had is in math. I can write an english paper the night before, and get an A+ on it, but I can't do Algebra. Anyway I don't think you can get a check for having ADD. If that were the case, there would be over a million people collecting a check for a learning disabilty.

Trying to get disability benefits is a very difficult and lengthy process. I doubt very much you will be able to get it for ADD. You would have to be diagnosed by a doctor first to see if that's indeed what you have. They would most likely put you on medication to help you focus better. Disability doesn't pay that much anyway. My sister was on it when she had terminal cancer and she still needed our dad to help her with her expenses.

That sounds like that commercial for Adult ADD, where the woman is sitting in the meeting and she's thinking about 20 other things instead. So it's totally plausible.

Anyway, I can be like that too. I get bored real easily, and then I'll wander off into another world. I did it in school, and when I'd come back to reality, I'd realize I had no idea what the hell had just gone on. So I think it's something a lot of us do.

As far as learning a job, I feel the same way. When I started this one in December, I made sure that on my first day, I took a notepad and pen because I was so scared of not getting everything and screwing up. I still carry my instructions around, though I never look at them. Security blanket I guess. But I think a lot of it with me is fear of failure. I'm am so afraid of screwing up that I'll avoid trying to do anything complex because I don't want co-workers looking at me like I'm an idiot. So I try to be perfect and it doesn't happen and I beat myself up over it. Maybe you have a fear of failure too. Best thing to do is to write everything down that you'll need to know for the job and keep it with you. Refer to it often. I don't know of any sane boss who would object to you writing things down.

As far as school goes, maybe a tutor? I know how reading books and not having a clue what you just read is like. To me, 98% of textbooks are boring and I think they're written that way on purpose. I swear, they could take a very interesting subject and make it terribly boring. Maybe if you had someone who you could sit with and have a discussion over the material, you'd retain it better. Not everyone is a good reader. Take a place like Sylvan Learning Centers. They find out what your strengths and weaknesses are and teach toward your strengths.

You are very courageous Isiah. I have a son who's just like you. I worry about him all the time.

It sounds like you have ADD. Try to stick to the jobs that you do have. (Jobs are becoming more difficult to come by.) The best I can tell you is that you need a trade. You seem good at computers so right there you've got alot going for you. You must stay focused on something. If at all possible see if you can tell a doctor what you've told us. And take it from there.

i my self have a learning disabilty. For me I had a drinking problem also,but got help for that.I have social security and I work 3 days a week. I got help with my problem 2 years ago and it didtake a long time,but I finally got it. In the past I LOST JOBS LEFT AND RIGHT, SOMETIMES JUST WALKED OUT ON THE FIRST DAY. I can't remember things from one second to the next sometimes. I work in a grocery store and I really like it,but sometimes I just want to leave.Go sgin up for Social Security and get some assitance,at first I did not want no help from no one,but I thought about it and why not,I do have a disabilty, I can't de nie it.I got picked on in JR high and some of high school,but thats be sides the ppoint. Like I said sgin up FOR IT. They also said that I had depression which I am getting help for that also.Do what you got to do.Hope this helps you.

That commercial is full of crap. I've had ADD/ADHD for as long as I can remember and it's not like "the channel is changing in your head every other second." or whatever. For the most part, I function like a person without a learning disability. I don't really have to be told twice to do something, I can usually get it done without a problem. As far as ADHD, I still have some problems with that. I blurt answers out in class sometimes, and I'm very compulsive.

But some people have this. I know my son has this. I worry about his future. His teachers have told me the same thing. I feel for my son. Hopefully one day people will get the help they need.

Pitooey sorry to hear that your son has the same problem i do. My brother has a foster kid who's 17 years old & my brother took him to a doctor to get tested. The doctor told my brother that the boy did poorly on the test. I think the test had school problems on it. The doctor also told my brother that the boy is almost ********. Don't tell the boy that he's ******** cause he thinks he got it going on cause he always be talkin about the girls at school be all over him & they call him sugar sweet LOL. He be talkin about he a pimp. He's so ignorant. He's gonna end up homeless if he don't get his life together cause he doesn't take life seriously enough. His grades aren't that good in school. I'm gonna see a psychiatrist about my problem & see what happens. I hope i can get a disability check cause i don't think i'm gonna be able to get a full time job ever cause nobody wants to hire me cause my job history is messed up. My uncle gets a disability check every month cause he hurt his foot on the job. He used to drive a towmotor at a factory & he left the towmotor in drive one day & the towmotor ran over his foot. He told me that he's gonna continue to collect a disability check & he doesn't wanna work anymore. I don't know how much money he gets every month but i don't know how he can take care of himself like that when he got 2 kids to take care of, rent, house note, car note, car insurance.

Alaskaboy i just read some information about signing up for social security & it said you gotta be 61 years old to get a social security/disability check.

Does he take any medication? I'm not one of those people who would push meds on anybody, but that really was the only thing that helped me out. My parents tried everything the doctors told them to, but it didn't work.

I have ADD, and it does feel like "the channel is changing in my head" every few moments. The commercial's portrayal is true for some people.

I have learning disabilities as well.I also have one due to nearsightedness.
Because of my vision and lack in depth perception I will never be able to
drive a motor vehicle which really sucks.I didn't even get my driver's license
at 16. Some of my friends laughed at me at first,But then they apologized
to me when they found out the real reason.But I don't care I won't get
anywhere really.I'm a babysitter for now.My I.Q. in school was 91.It's
still the same.I just hope I can find a job soon.I hate learning disabilities.
