Default Where did the clothes COME FROM?

Heres a major blooper of the show:

They were going on a 3 hour cruise, but when they ended up on the island, they had lots of different clothes, except for Gilligan and the Skipper. What was with that?

I always pack every article of clothing I own for an afternoon boatride.

You never know when you'll be needing your tuxedo.

Well, the Howells are rich people! They never leave home without 12 suitcases at least. They're always changing clothes.Mary Ann won this trip so,she had to bring her suitcase.Ginger only had the dress that she was wearing but,she made her clothes with Gilligan's duffel bag or other material that the Howell didn't need. The professor always wore the same clothes too.

Here's Russell Johnson's answer to questions like that: "It's in the script!"

I think people forget that it's only a sitcom and a fantasy show. Not everything makes sense that's why it's so unique and fun to watch

According the the offical Bon Denver website, the 3 hour tour was the boat ride to one of Mr. and Mr.s Howell's resorts that he owned on a island. They were going to his resort to spend time there.

How Mary Ann Ended up there was because she won a radio contest to the Howell's resort.

http://www.bobdenver.com/Ask_Bob/FAQ..._archives.html

fan's excellent explanation for the 'why so many clothes?' question.

Jeff Taylor from North Carolina
Hi Bob,
One of the biggest GI questions seems to be why the castaways took so
many clothes on a 3 hour Hawaiian Island excursion. Well I have an
explanation that I think fits with most of the GI storylines.

My explanation is the 3 hour tour was not a round trip. The 5 passengers
were originally enroute to a remote Hawaiian club med type resort. The
resort is owned in part by one of Mr. Howell's companies. It's a real
ritzy place that high society people go to just to get away from it all.
Some guests at the resort stay for several weeks at a time. Mary Ann won
the trip in a radio station sweepstakes. The Professor had been invited
to the resort to speak at a convention of Asian college professors. The
resort is very remote and not easily accessible by car. Guests use the
boat shuttle service that is provided by the resort. The SS Minnow is
one of several charter boats contracted by the resort to shuttle guests.
Guests enroute to the resort can choose the direct shuttle that takes
about 30 minutes, or they can choose an island tour shuttle that takes
about 3 hours. The 3-hour tour is very scenic and relaxing (usually),
many guests prefer it over the 30 minute direct shuttle.

Default Mary Ann

I remember hearing that Mary Ann had won a trip to Hawaii-----maybe it's in one of the later episodes as a quick reference?

In any case, it is the most logical explanation. The Howells, of course, were rich. The Professor was a professional person on vacation. Gilligan and the Skipper were working. Ginger was in Hawaii to do nightclub engagements.

...but what about Mary Ann? In the first episode the radio announcer says that she works in the general store in a small town in Kansas. She would have had to win the trip.

Cool

I've thought of this, and here are MY theories --

A ship wrecked somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, a box full of clothes ( or SEVERAL boxes of clothes ) washed up on Gilligan's Island, and the castaways found them and made good use of them . This box ( or boxes ) contained a large selection of red polo shirts, large dark blue shirts, and white button -- down shirts .

I generally believe that Mr . and Mrs . Howell were on vacation, and they had several suitcases full of clothes with them when they saw the Skipper's tour boat . Several episodes featured a scene where Mr . and Mrs . Howell made Gilligan carry their suitcases around, usually when it looked like they were going to be rescued .

The castaways used to talk about "the other side of the island" . I imagined "the other side of the island" had a store named "Castaway Clothes" . It sold everything a castaway might want as far as clothes go, and it had a large selection of red polo shirts, large dark blue shirts, and white button -- down shirts . It received a new shipment of clothes from Hawaii twice a month .

I was going to say "You're free to pick the solution you like best ." and leave it at that . However, I decided to ask WHICH solution do you like the best -- and WHY ? The answer to that question should give us some insight into your personality .

I have always maintained that it was not a round trip . . . except for the Professor. The Professor was out researching a book about ferns. He must have planned to return to home port with Gilligan and the Skipper after a day of foraging for fun ferns.

By the way, we know they set sail for Hawaii. That's a little vague. Did they ever say from which island? The Big Island? Maui? Oahu?

To me, as a child I was always curious about all the costumes..

I came to the conclusion that "like the magic episode" maybe a crate floated ashore (off camera) full of those costumes...

I can understand the Howells explanation.. but the gallons of perfume confused me.... They never seemed to run out of makeup either..

And if you want to say Ginger packed as well why would she not have anything casual??

Gilligan and Skipper's clothes got destroyed in several episodes but yet they had spares...

Just sayin!!
