List of things Hanna - Barbera "borrowed" from others

I am starting to discover that a majority of the stuff that came from Hanna- Barbara is stolen from others. The Simpsons episode "The Day The Violence Ended" exposes several of Hanna - Barbara's stolen ideas.

Jackie Gleason is the most exploded person by Hanna - Barbara. Not the only one, but the most exploded.

The most famous one is of course the Flintstones being a variation of the Honeymooners. And that is the not the only thing they took from the show. Yogi Bear is a variation of Ed Norton. Some Flintstones and Jetsons episodes use the same titles as Honeymooner episodes. And in the first episode of the Jetsons, some Honeymooners catchpraces were used. Mr. Spacely said "I got a big mouth" and George said to a door "One of these days bang right in the kisser."

In the episode of the Flintstones when Pebbles was born. Some of the events (I am not talking about a baby being born) in the episodes were similar to the events on the episode of I Love Lucy when Little Ricky was born.

I started the list, list some more ideas Hanna - Barbara took from others. Not that I am mad at Hanna - Barbara, but I think it is a fun idea.

1.YOGI BEAR [the good, oriignal, 1957-1962 one with the charming and the very imorta;l Daws Butler] was partly based on Art Carney as Ed Norton [THE HONEYMOKONERS] and also, obviousoly Phil Silvers as Ernie T.Bilko [SGT BILKO-of course we also know that both TOP CAT (Arnjold Stang) and Hokey Woplf (Daws Butler)(q.q.vboth below) were also PS/BILKO influenced too! and of course barney (Mel Blanc) was a takeoff on Ed Norton (Art Carney) as you speak of from HONEYMOONERS)-and also oN Walter Lantz's BREEZLY BEAR (Butler in a JHackie Gleaosn like mode-Yogi often also had the Great Gleason One's attitude too) and Disney'ssilent Humphrery the bear (costarring Clarence Ducky Nasha s Donald and BilL THompson--from Disney,.MGM and H'B's TOUCHE TURTLE--as the voice of the Ranger!).In kind Hanna-Barbera (for WALLY AGTOR,1962, SQUIDDLEY DIDDLEY,1965 and HELP! IT'S THE HAIR BEAR BUNCH, 1971 and Leonardo-Total TV for TENNESSE TUXEDOl, 1963,would replicate the "prisoner lower creature" format from YOGI sduccessfully as well). We cxould go on all day, to paraphrase one of crooner Perry Como's old 40ss hits, bbut..

George=Joe Doake, of Warner short live fame (both George O'Hanlon, who possibly did some one shot Warner and MGM voices)

Jane=Blondie (again,same actress=Penny Singleton)

Judy Jetson=Corliss Archer (obscure oldtime radio teen, the Amanda Bynes, Clarissa and Hilary Duff of World War II on MEET CORLISS-Janet Waldo-reprised of course for scores of H-B and Ruby Spears teenage girls including "Nancy" the blonde girl on SHAZZAN [1967-1970], PENELOPE PITSTOP ([1969'71]'s title character,a and title lead of JOSIE & THE PUSSYCATS [1970-76]).,also possibly Annette Funicello, Nancy Sinatra, and Shelly Fabares on THE DONAN RED SHOW,perhaos?

Elroy Jetson = miscelannous stock sitocm boy characters, and Daws Butler's various ltitle boy character slike BEANY BOY (pupopets),and AUGIE DOGGIE<reprised for Second Banana in the first Warner Bros.1967 cartoon MERLIN THE MAGIC MOUSE, a character taken over by veteran comedian Larry Storch (WB's live F TROOP and TTV's animated TUXEDO as Mr.Whoopee) for the rest of the five episode theatricals MERLIN THE MAGIC MOUSE, for whim Butler and SDtorch did a WC Fields voice.-and for Lant'zs pengyuin kid CHILLY WILLY, and now I remember used for one of Hanna Barber'as Meeces, Pxcie or Dixie (the one NOT done by Don Messick..Butler also did Mr.Jinks the cat.)

Astro was an original, but his faithful voicer Don Messick (Dog Messick?) turned it into the standared dialect for the studio's biggest franchise, SCOOBY DOOBY DOO (ROOBY ROO)



Pixie and Dixie were apparnetly borrowed from Warner's Hubie and Bertie, (Hubiu, a New York accented mouse and Bertie, a kinda dumb hick-voiced variosuly by writers Mike Mlatese & Tedd Pierce, and by vooice artists Mel Blanc, Bob Bruce,Stan Freberg and Dick Nelson,though it';s rather haerd to decide which was which,though I knwo that Maltewse was HUbie and Pierce, Bertie) and sdeveral cats,one named Aristo--and the next,Claude.(That would be the Jinks character).

Hokey Wolf and Top Cat, of coruse, were knockoffs on the old 1955-1959 SGT BILKO aka YOU':LL NEVER GET RICH aka PHIL SILVERS SHOW starring you know who, and Yogi Bear had a lot of that as well.

After SCOOBY did pretty well first time out besides continued success JOSIE, INCH HIGH PRIVATE EYE, BUTCH AND THE SUNDANCE KIDS and FUNKY PHANTOM during the early seventies, and CLUE CLUB and JABBERJAW filled the void that kids misisng their faithful Saturday AM morning mutt would enjoy.

PENELOPE PITSTOP was based on those old 1900s silents with early star Pearl Whiute (PERILS OF PAULINE).

Since we're discussing H-B's habit of "borrowing", so to speak...

1.) Yes, "The Flintstones" (and, to a lesser extent, "Yogi Bear") came from "The Honeymooners", this much is certain...but I've also noted in previous posts that "The Jetsons" was adapted from Chic Young's "Blondie" comic strip (or, more accurately, the radio version of the comic strip featuring Penny Singleton, who also portrayed Jane Jetson, as Blondie Bumstead and Arthur Lake as Dagwood...indeed, if you listen to any of the radio episodes, the relationship between Blondie, Dagwood and Mr. Dithers is eerily replicated with Jane, George and Mr. Spacely);

2.)Note also that "Top Cat", while indeed intended as a takeoff of "You'll Never Get Rich" also owes something to the Dead-End Kids/East Side Boys/Bowerey Boys film series;

3.) "The Adventures of Jonny Quest", which H-B claims was "Inspired" by the long-running radio serial "Jack Armstrong, The All-American Boy", is, in reality, an update of Milton Caniff's seminal comic strip "Terry and the Pirates" (with Jonny, Race and Hadji as stand-ins for Terry, Pat Ryan and Connie with a sci-fi twist...never mind the parralells between Jezebel Jade and the Dragon Lady...);

4.) And if you can't see the strong (Intentional) resemblance "Space Ghost" has to "Batman" (or, for that matter, "Birdman" to "Hawkman", "Young Samson" to "Captain Marvel" {even down to similar facial features} or "Mighty Mightor" to "Superman" {no, REALLY!!}) then you haven't been paying attention;

5.) Also, lest we forget, the many solo H-B stars based on personalities from days gone by (Wally Gator=Ed Wynn; Snagglepuss=Bert Larh {specifically his portrayal of The Cowardly Lion in MGM's "The Wizard Of Oz}; Doggy Daddy=Jimmy Durante; Super Snooper=Ed Gardner's Archie the Bartender from "Duffy's Tavern", etc., etc...)

Of course, as far as the Hanna Barbera characters' origins are concerned, it's not where they came from, but what was done with them that matters...

And dont forget Yakky Doodle, who was a dirrect rippoff of the unamed duck in the MGM tom and Jerry cartoons...of course, since Hanna and Barbera created them TOO, they were really stealing from themselves!
