For as long as she can remember, actress Amy Yasbeck has been wild about wings. "I have a whole collection of angels and cherubs and dragonfly jewelry. Whenever somebody gives me a gift, it has wings," says Yasbeck, who climbs on board the cast of NBC's hit sitcom Wings tonight as Casey, Helen Chapple's (Crystal Bernard) older, "perfect" sister. "I cried like Miss America when I got the part," says Yasbeck, who has a mural of "a blue sky with fluffy white clouds" on the ceiling of her high-rise condo. Fans of the show know Helen's heretofore unseen sister as "the rich, married one" - and a thorn in Helen's fuselage. But when her world nose-dives, Casey flies to the (unsuspecting) arms of her former nest-mate. On tonight's show (8 ET/PT, NBC), Casey threatens the most romantic night of Helen's life when she gives her little sister a 2-carat gift that takes the sparkle out of Joe's (Tim Daly) engagement ring. "There's always been a bad case of sibling rivalry between them," she says of the sister act. "Helen has always put Casey on a kind of a pedestal, always envious of her." Offscreen, Yasbeck says, it's she who has always looked up to Bernard. "I've been watching her on TV and talking about her for years," she says in a perky, slightly husky voice. She reels off highlights from Bernard's high-flying career, including her stint on Happy Days as Mr. C's teen-age niece, K.C., and her waitress shift on the ABC sitcom It's a Living . "She's just great at physical comedy," she gushes. They had never worked together before Yasbeck's Wings character took off. But they did share the same flight pattern. "Once on an audition, I moved my purse so Crystal could sit down, and she gave me a big smile," she recalls. "I was so in awe of her that I almost forgot why I was there. All I could think was, `Crystal Bernard smiled at me.' " Yasbeck can also be seen playing the dubious ace reporter in the big-screen blockbuster Mask, opposite Jim Carrey. "I've seen it four times already and forget that I'm even in it because Jim is so magnificent to watch," she says of the film's chameleon star. Adding fuel to the comic fire on Wings this season: Antonio (the immigrant cab driver played by Tony Shalhoub) develops the hots for Helen's hoity-toity sister. But when it comes to hanging around the hangar, Yasbeck says she wouldn't turn up her nose at a layover with the zany, fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants Brian (Steven Weber). "Hey, I wouldn't mind," she says. "I mean, he is awfully cute." Copyright 1994, USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Co., Inc. 05-23-1995 |
