Now while I like this show, there are some characters that maybe should've just stayed a gleam in the writer's eyes.
The character I can't stand is Gina. I can't stand her sassy, head bobbin', sistah-girl acting ignorant self. It just grates...and is also a scathing reminder that even if you go to a good school to be with intelligent people, there will always be someone ignorant who seeps through the cracks. Who do you find "pointless" as a character? |

I actually liked Gina...not as much as the other characters, but I thought she had some pretty funny moments! All her "Saints go Marching in!" and "It was an AFRO!"....I thought she had some good moments.
I wasn't really a fan of Dorian. I think the actor was cute, but I couldn't stand his holier-than-thou, "I am a preacher!" type of voice. Who talks like that all the time?? It drove me crazy. He could still be conservative and religious without sounding like that. |

The newer students in the last season or so weren't as endearing as Kim, Freddie, Whitley etc, but I wouldn't say that any were totally pointless, although I didn't like Dorian either. Millie in year 1 and Lettie were probably the most useless characters in the whole series.

Gloria and Allison were less used than Millie and Lettie in season one to me.

Maggie (Marissa Tomei's character from the first season). It wasn't so much that they had a white character like her going to an HBCU in the first place, it's that had her there and didn't really deal with it/acknowledge it. I think that was one big issue with the first season in general in that it didn't really depict an actual HBCU.
Denise was even a rather pointless character in the sense that (and I don't know for sure if this is mostly on Lisa Bonet or the writing) she didn't stand out at all versus the supporting characters. |
