SANTA MARIA -- Four men and four women were chosen Thursday to serve as alternate jurors for pop star Michael Jackson's child molestation trial, setting the stage for opening statements to begin next week.

The alternates were selected a day after the regular jury of 12 was sworn in by Superior Court Judge Rodney S. Melville, bringing a rapid completion to a process that had been expected to take weeks.

The judge said he will hear motions from attorneys Friday and opening statements will start Monday. Melville urged attorneys to have witnesses and evidence available so as not to waste jurors' time.

"I will not abide not having witnesses ready," the judge said.

The alternate panel included one black man. Defense attorneys objected this week when the prosecution rejected two black women from serving.

The women were among several jurors each side was allowed to dismiss without stating a reason. The judges overruled the defense objections to their dismissal, and Jackson appeared upset when each woman was removed.

The jury is mostly white and Latino. Race could be a factor because public opinion polls show blacks are less inclined to believe the charges against Jackson, who is black. Alternates will be called on if there is a problem with one of the four men and eightr women on jury panel.

The alternates reflect the small-town character of northern Santa Barbara County and the influence of Jackson and his storybook Neverland Ranch on the region.

The alternate panel includes a man who had been to Neverland with his three children because his mother-in-law used to be a housekeeper for Jackson. The former housekeeper is on the list of possible witnesses, but the man told attorneys he would be able to treat his mother-in-law like any other witness.

The jurors, drawn from the region where Jackson lives and ranging in age from 20 to 79, are responsible for deciding whether Jackosn molested a 13-year-old former cancer patient at the ranch.
