Cool The series finale...

I watched pretty much all of the Benson episodes. But, I can't remember seeing the series finale. How did it end? What was the last scene like? Can anyone help with a description or better a copy on VHS or DVD?

Thanks!!!

It ended in a clifthanger. The Governor and Benson was watching tv as the returns for the election were coming in( Benson and The Governor were each running for Governor), and as the announcer got ready to announce the winner the show ended.

In retrospect they probably made the smart choice. Because had they picked a winner, no matter which person it was, someone would have been complaining!

Default The Series Finale

I wish that Benson would have sent another Year
that way we could see if Benson became The New Governor

All I can say is, if Soap didn't get a finale then Benson should not have had one either. Yes, I'm bitter.

Wink Benson would have won....

I believe I saw an interview where Guillame stated that the plan had been for Benson to win, and thus reinvent the show with new cast members, to try to bring ratings up, but even that storyline failed to bring the fans back to the show

too bad, i loved Benson, it was such an interesting sitcom!

It is too bad that didn't happen, but it's tough for a spin-off to spin off (if you know what I mean! ) Usually by then the core fans fade away or become discontent with the way things end up. Look at "Cheers", which spun off "Frasier". As hugely successful and popular as "Frasier" was, there is no spin-off. I would imagine the challenge gets greater and greater each time to continuously be creative and innovative.

But your point is well taken.

I'm glad that they didn't do that. When a show reinvents itself it never works, look at One on One on UPN.

Default I'm not sure HOW much "BENSON"...

...might have been "reinvented" (if Robert Guillaume's statement about the show's possible renewal is correct). If Benson had won the election, I'm pretty sure we would have seen the return of Clayton as HIS aide [more comic tension] and Gene Gatling acting as a "consultant"...with some new characters occupying the Governor's mansion {possibly Gretchen Kraus would have moved on, finally getting married to "Arnold", and a new chief housekeeper would have taken her place}, and possibly Benson finally marrying that Senator at the end of the season...but we'll never know.

That would have created some good romantic tension if they would have made her deal with the fact that she would have to resign her position if she became the governor's wife. Or they both would have lost, they could have sat around packing all day and doing a 'clips' show where they talk about the memories and progression through the seasons.

The ironic part is that there were four endings filmed and they chose the cliffhanger. Maybe they were trying to pay hommage to SOAP since they ended with a nasty cliffhanger. I do agree with you, a show needs to know when its time to go. The worse thing I think is the 'A Different World' complex where you are pulled at midseason, brought back after May finales to air your finale and then all the other episodes are aired in a random order until midsummer leaving unaired episodes.
