Question LUKE'S DRAFT STATUS

Anyone know Luke's draft status? I figured with his thick glasses, he was probably 4-F, and based on the fact that he isn't worried about being drafted, I was pretty sure that what he was. Anyone else have an opinion?

4-F means inelligable for the draft, in case someone unfamilair with draft status terms didn't know.

What do you mean by his "draft status"?

During the Vietnam era, any young man who was not married/head of household or in college faced the possibility of being drafted, unless he had another legitimate deferment -- "flat feet" or bad eyesight were two of the most-used. I'd have to think that Luke would be deferred because of his eyesight; otherwise, he'd be drafted.

Default Luke's Draft Status

Oh okay, thanks. I knew about people being drafted and all, but not by what you meant, "his status". Anyway, yeah, I don't think they've mentioned it but I could be wrong.

Remember, it's still only 1966 on the show. I wasn't alive then, but I imagine that the draft wasn't really a threat until a couple of years later. Plus, Luke could always enroll in college; at that point, being enrolled in college exempted a young man from the draft. Later on, that wasn't the case, but in the mid-60s, it was.

In the middle of 1965 Secretary McNamara had the Selective Service ramp up draft calls. He also forced the Pentagon, against their wishes, to lower their minimum aptitude scores for inductees. In other words, he forced the Pentagon to take a lot of stupid kids, thus putting their lives, and the lives of their fellow soldiers in danger.

I am thinkin that if Luke were able to wear contacts (he is, isn't he?) that his glasses are not all *that* thick.

I don't know much about contacts, but isn't it true that if your glasses are really thick, contacts may not be an option?
