Hello all,
I've been enjoying Season 4 of Good Times this week and am almost more than half way through the set. It certainly is an odd season of course, with the killing off of the James Evans character. He was one of my favorites and I'm not always comfortable with his absence. Add to that I think there are moments where it seems his family got over his passing a little too fast. He isn't nearly mentioned or thought about as much as I think he should have been. I did appreciate how Florida told James' father how much she missed him. That gave some insight as to how much she was still mourning James' passing. This caused me to wonder though. How many more episodes make reference to James? Is he even mentioned in Season 5? How about the last Season? The last episode? I realize the show had to move forward and all, but watching these Season 4 episodes, knowing that James is deceased, isn't very pleasant and those small references to him help to make my viewing the episodes a little more comfortable. That's why I hope mention is made of him in Seasons 5 & 6. I hope they didn't pull the same stunt as the producers did on The Hogan Family, formerly Valerie's Family, formerly Valerie. When star Valerie Harper was fired from Valerie, the producers killed off her character, Valerie Hogan, in an off-screen automobile accident (sound familiar?) and, other than a couple of later episodes, her family made no reference to her again. No mention was made of her family missing her or anything of that nature (and she was an integral part of the show when she was on it!). It was almost as if she had never existed. I hope the same wasn't done with James on Good Times during Seasons 5 & 6. He wasn't the entire show, but he definitely was part of its heart... Ed |

The last episode in season 4 that makes a reference to James is the episode-"My Son, the Father". James was not mentioned at all in season 5. He wasn't mentioned again until season 6 when Florida returned. |

I have to agree. I loved the show as a child and when they killed off James it made the series unpleasant so I stopped watching the whole year until I got caught up in the next season.
It just seemed kind of depressing watching. This family lost their father. Didn't seem funny to me. And watching in syndication that season was not funny at all.. It was too permanent. It even made watching the episodes with him in syndication unpleasant to watch. Oh well. It is just TV right? |
