Winkler Grateful for Role As 'The Fonz'

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Henry Winkler says his days as "The Fonz" really were "Happy Days." Winkler played the supercool, leather-jacketed Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli on the sitcom, which aired from 1974 to 1984.

"The creating of 'The Fonz' came slowly," Winkler told AP Radio in an interview. "Whoa! came from my favorite sport at the time, which was horseback riding. Whoa."

The show starred Winkler and Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham, and followed the life of the Cunningham family during the 1950s. It was created by Gary Marshall.

Winkler, 59, said he has great memories of the comedy show. The cast recently reunited for a 30th-anniversary special on ABC. "I'm unbelievably grateful that I was able to play that character and go where that character took me," he said. "I traveled all over the world because of 'The Fonz.'"

I've always been a big fan of Henry Winkler's work, the Fonz was a great character and turned him into a star but he is a truly talented man and seems to be one of the nicest guys around.

If you ever get a chance to see the Winkler-produced "Dead Man's Gun" series do so

(Thanks Janice!)

its nice to see an actor who dosent put down or try to run from the role that made him famous . too many actors once they move on to other things like to pretend that ther sig. roles dont exsist like eve plumb or for a long time jean stapleton so its nice to see that henry feels so great about the fonz

I am sure those were really your "Happy Days". That is because even today I still love watching "Happy Days" on television or on a VCR tape with witch I recorded a few epeisodes to. I remember them showing the Henry Winkler interview witch lasted either an hour or half of an hour and I recorded it as well. I was happy to see Henry Winlker get hired to a new CBS sitcom a week or two ago. "Happy Days" has been my favorite television show for a long time now. A few other shows I like are "MacGyver" and "The Waterboy".

Reminds me of John Stamos, who so desperatly tried to get rid of his 'Uncle Jessie from Full House'- image.

Nice words spoken bij Henry. He put it very well.

I stil love watching an episode of Happy Days. It does not matter how many times I have seen it in the past. I just say the cast member's lines with them. Just like you were telling me about yourself liking to watch The Waterboy and MacGyver. I bought a The Waterboy DVD and am planning on getting some MacGyver DVDs because I watch that a lot as well. I like his new show and I have respected Henry Winkler very much ever since he sent me an autographed picture of himself witch I have framed on a wall in one room.
