Default This show is not good for Southerners !

Is this show actually supposed to be a positive portrayl of Southerners?
Really? 4 has been Actresses cursing in fake southern accents is not
my idea of something positve for the South. I realize its a TV Sit Com,
but thats even worse because its not funny. The women are nice to look at.
Delta Burke, in my opinion is the best looking one of the bunch, with or
without the weight. But, I'm from the South, and this show does nothing for me. I suppose for Southern women it might, but this show is just not
a good show, and very unrealistic about the South.

What are you talking about? I am from the south and this show is definitely not horrible. I don't agree with your statement of this show not being accurate. And what do you mean "fake" accents? Dixie Carter is from Tennessee and Delta Burke is from Florida.

I suppose not, although Jean Smart isn't from the South, and i hestitate
to call Florida a Southern state- only the extreme northern part of it is
Southern, and thats marginal.

But this show tries too hard to show the New Liberal South.
And all this preachy stuff. Julia goes into some bleeding
heart liberal rant, and Yankees go "Wow, they aren't as
all backwards as I thought". Thats what they're trying to
do with this show, but to me its forced.

And its not really very funny. But I'm a guy, so maybe it would
appeal more to Southern women.

This show is a wonderful show. It does not mis-represent the south. The original poster must still be living in the stone age.

Don't watch the show if you don't like it. Nobody is forcing you.

That doesn't make sense to me..but w/e dude. Don't watch the show you're a guy, you're not supposed to appreciate it. But what about all those movies that have actors in other countries or with accents? it's called ACTING. It's not supposed to all be true.

Yes, I realize its acting. I'm an actor myself. I realize you dont have to be from the South to play a Southerner, a Southerner can play a Yankee, etc, etc. Most of the cast of GWTW was British. Clark Gable was from Ohio.

My point is about the show itself. I just dont think its a good show, and its trying too hard to get this new liberal South thing across. I realize its just a comedy show. But it does have a political agenda. Its just very grating. But yes, you're right, maybe if I had a bit more estrogen in me, I could understand its appeal.

I laugh at how some Southern people still refer to Northern people as “Yankees”.
I’m not offended or anything, but the term seems so archaic to me (like we’re back in Civil War times). LOL!

I’ve heard foreign people -- mostly from the UK --- refer to ALL Americans as “Yanks”, though.

Living in the south, I must say most if not all people say northerners or people (from) up north. The only time I hear yankee is from the words of the people I know from the north, they call themselves that.

As for Florida not being southern, HUH you dont have to have a backwards tongue or a farm to be southern. Not all of us southerns live on a tobacco farm in a plantation with nanny's and a southern drawal. I live in Louisiana, yes before you claim Louisiana is not southern we are very southern. The problem with people who dont think Fl. is southern is looking to hard at the fact that retired people and vacationers have flocked to that area bringing their own ways and accents to FL.
As for Designing Women, you obviously have not met many true southern women. Southern women liberated south or not have a sharp tongue like Julia, a naive side like Mary Joe, and a desire to be looked at as intelligent and not the stereo typed backwards redneck who lives in a trailer with 10 kids, beer drinking husband that is also her brother or cousin, and married since she was 13. Southerners have a great pride in their heritage, history, and charm. That is why they have the saying "there is no woman like a southern woman".
