does anyone remember FAMILY of the late 1970s with Sada Thompson, Meredith Baxter, Kristy McNichol, James Broderick? I loved that show and the theme song was sweet and pensive...

I used to watch it sometimes. It was a pretty good show.

Another Aaron Spelling show. I remember Gary Franks character would call Kristy Mcnichols character Peaches. I think Gary or Kristy received emmy nominations possible awards.

Yup - sure do. It was a pretty good show too. I remember my mom and I trying to figure out if Kristy was a boy or girl for the first season or two. Then they hooked her up with Leif Garrett and I was so jealous!!
Had a bit of a crush on Gary Frank too. Now there's another one TVLand could even bring back on the weekends for a while. Would be better than those westerns! |

Both Gary Frank (no 'S') and Kristy McNichol (no 'S') won best supoorting Emmys for the '76-'77 season. Kristy won again for the '79-'80 season. |

Hey guys, thanks for responding to my thread. Yeah, "Family" beckoned to a simpler more peaceful time...
(p.s. Insert apostophes -- ' -- in "coffeecup's" wording and I think his/her grammar would be okay; i.e., Gary Frank's...)

That makes sense. I thought coffeecup was just adding an S to the name, you know how some people call Donna Summer Donna Summers. |

I loved this show. I can relate to the relationship between Buddy and Willie.
Also, Doug and Kate remind me of my parents, back then. I would love to see this show released on DVD. |

Gee it has been six months since I posted. I forget what I posted. I was using possesive term for the names. I did leave out ' in the names. Anyway they did win awards. In fact I think at the time Kristy was the youngest actress to win the award. She was about 14. It was sad that James Broderick died not to soon after the show went off the air.

Meredith Baxter Birney was the reason why I grew to watch Family. She was a hottie on that show. Her performances on the show was powerful and worth watching. When the storylines featured Meredith's character, Nancy, the show moved in a way that grabbed your attention. She was much better suited for that show than Family Ties. Meredith was more of a dramatic actress than a sitcom actress.

I was born in 1980, so I never watched the first run. Growing up in the early 80's, they ran it in syndication on WGN in Chicago, so I remember watching it with my Mom. Up until the recent DVD release, I only remembered fragments of the show (I remember Doug getting hit by a car, and remember wondering if Buddy was a boy or a girl).
When I was doing my normal browsing in the TV section at Best Buy, I saw the DVD set. I was stunned. I figured that it might not ever see syndication again, and I wanted to see it so bad that I broke down and bought it. Watching it and being old enough to understand it, I must say it is a well-written, very real show. I love it. I have been watching one episode a night, just before I go to bed. Isn't this ironic? The episode I remember the most (where Doug gets hit by a car) is located on the 5th and 6th disc of the DVD set. It's amazing to see how the fragments embedded in your memory play out when you see it some 20+ years later. |
