That right! "Planet Rock" was the first song ever to launched its record label Tommy Boy Records. Afrika Bambaataa was one of the first artists to signed with the label. Here's what they say according to the Tommy Boy's website:

Tommy Boy Records was founded by Tom Silverman in his New York City apartment back in 1981, the label released the definitive 12' hip-hop single "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa featuring the Soul Sonic Force. The record went gold and it was sold an amazing 600 thousand copies back then, making the best record ever for the launched of Tommy Boy. That's right! Tommy Boy is the label dedicated to hip-hop and dance music. The song was very popular in the street and it the projects. That makes "Planet Rock" an unique song.

Tommy Boy records used to have De La Soul & Naughty By Nature on their label. Above The Law also did two albums on Tommy Boy called Time Will Reveal & Legends. De La Soul are the only rappers that stayed with Tommy Boy until 2001 & after that year, the label folded.
