rufus wainwright - in a graveyard

This next song is a song about death, and...how you shouldn't be afraid of it. Also, I wrote it on acid, so it should be pretty good..."

I have the record album on vinyl. Great songs. "Running With the Night", "All Night Long", "Hello!" and "Love Will Find a Way" are great classics. Does anybody heard the song "Stuck on You". Is it a country song? I've heard that song but it sounded a lot like country music to me.

Who is Octavius? Stuck On You does sound like a country song Musicradio77. I'm a big Lionel Richie fan. I got a friend of mine to burn me The Commodores Midnight Magic & In The Pocket albums on cd. Midnight Magic is a very good album that has the classic songs Sail On, Still, Wonderland. In The Pocket album has the hit song Lady(You Bring Me Up). That song is the jam. I also have The Commodores Heroes album on cd burned off the internet cause it's not available to buy on cd. That's a very good album also that has the hit songs Jesus Is Love, Old Fashioned Love, Celebrate.

while I wouldn't say I think Can't Slow Down deserved the Grammy (IMO 1984 was the year of Prince), I do think it was a really good album. "Stuck On You" really showed just what a diverse artist Lionel really is. When you think about it, all 5 hit singles off the album were pretty drastically different. "All Night Long" was very dance, "Running With The Night" was rock-fused, "Hello" was pure Adult Contemporary, "Stuck On You" was country (and even got Lionel a country hit) and "Penny Lover" was soul.

You summed it up very nicely.

And I agree about Prince.

Before I disagree with you, let me say welcome back to the boards.

I understand what you mean about the different styles of music on Can't Slow Down. Dancing On The Ceiling was that way too. But I wouldn't call it being diverse as much as I consider him trying to cover as many bases as he could and appeal to everybody. He's more a songwriter than an all around musician (like Prince). Someone like Prince would get more respect from me in terms of doing pop or funk or rock or whatever. When Lionel does it, it just feels like he's going for the lowest common denominator: the masses. It's not authentic, everything Lionel does, I consider it pseudo. Stuck On You is pseudo country, Running With The Night was pseudo rock, Se La was pseudo reggae. When he left the Commodores he lost the passion for making good heartfelt music and just went with making hits.

Having said all that, I do like Lionel Richie. I was a big fan from the Commodores days and his solo career. It's just now I consider him a safe, mainstream pop guy. There's nothing wrong with that but I just can't put him on that high a level.

When I call Lionel pseudo, I mean he's not really passionate about that music enough to make you really feel it. It's just that he's trying to appeal to the listening audience that way.

How you figure he's not passionate enough about the music? He always puts his heart & soul into his music. Critics came down hard on him during The Commodores later years cause their music started sounding more pop instead of funky like their earlier albums but i disagree with that. Critics said the same thing about Kool & The Gang's albums when James Taylor was with them saying they lost their funkyness when he joined the group cause their music was sounding pop. If it wasn't for James, the group wouldn't have had any success. I didn't like their music before James joined them. Hollywood Swingin & Jungle Boogie songs i like but that's it.

This was Lionel Richie at his best. Right in the heydey of Thriller, Purple Rain, Born in the USA. Those are all my favorite songs.

I agree totally about Kool And The Gang... their early funk stuff was alright, but I don't think they really found their heart until J.T. came in

I think that 1984 was actually the year of Springsteen with Born in the USA.
