CBS' 'Everybody Loves Raymond' Ends Run

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Don't look for a supersized, super-stuffed final episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond." Television's most popular sitcom will end its nine-year run on May 16 with - get this - a half-hour show, CBS said Tuesday.

"We didn't want to milk the story into an hour," series star Ray Romano said. "There's been enough of that," added Phil Rosenthal, executive producer.

Of course, CBS will precede that 30 minutes with an hourlong retrospective to make it an attractive event for advertisers. The cast is filming the finale this week and keeping tightlipped on whether the battling Barone family will exit arguing.

The actors and Rosenthal said it will be an emotional week, but that they are walking away without any sense of unfinished business.

"The reason we're stopping is that we've done every single thing that we can think of," Rosenthal said. "We are bone dry."

Comic Brad Garrett, who plays Romano's brother, Robert Barone, said he hasn't been approached about a potential spinoff. "I love the character," he said. "I'm open to it."

"Supposedly there is a group of people that are out there talking about it that aren't talking to me," he quipped. "I hear they're looking for a Brad Garrett type."

Monica Horan, who plays Garrett's wife, Amy, said her interest in a spinoff would probably hinge on what her real-life husband wants to do. She's married to Rosenthal.

Taking a cue from NBC's strategy for the last year of "Friends" in 2004, CBS said it is asking viewers to vote next month on their favorite episodes of "Everybody Loves Raymond." The top five vote-getters will be shown each Monday from Feb. 28 to March 28.

Fans can vote online for their favorites among 15 episodes selected by Rosenthal, with highlight clips shown on the network's Web site.

Since the first season, Rosenthal was producing what he hoped would be a timeless sitcom in an old television tradition. "We're doing the show for CBS, but in the back of my mind we're doing it for Nick at Nite," he said. "We wanted the show to have lasting value."

Wow, I'm really surprised that it will only be a half hour finale. I really hope Garrett gets his own spinoff.

CBS's EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, television's definitive family comedy for nearly a decade, will end its nine-year run when the series finale is broadcast Monday, May 16 (9:00-9:30 PM, ET/PT).

"We don't want to give away any details about the content of the finale episode because we don't want to dilute the experience for the audience in any way," said creator/executive producer Phil Rosenthal, who wrote the episode, titled "Finale," along with his entire writing staff.

Preceding the series finale, a special one-hour retrospective will be broadcast from 8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT. The special will feature behind-the-scenes footage from the final season as well as highlights from all nine seasons and interviews with the cast.

Leading up to the series finale, CBS.com will offer viewers an opportunity to vote for their favorite EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND episodes with the five episodes receiving the most votes broadcast on CBS beginning in late February and airing throughout March.

Voting will officially begin on Sunday, Feb. 13, during CBS's broadcast of the "47th Annual Grammy Awards," and will run through Feb. 27. CBS.com will offer clips ranging in length from 30-70 seconds of 15 classic "Raymond" episodes culled from Seasons One through Eight as chosen by creator/executive producer Phil Rosenthal.

The five episodes receiving the most votes will be broadcast beginning Monday, Feb. 28 with the fifth most popular, and culminating with the all-time fan favorite episode on Monday, March 28.

EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, starring Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, Brad Garrett, Peter Boyle and Monica Horan, has been nominated for 65 Emmy Awards, winning 12, including Best Comedy Series.

EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND premiered on Friday, Sept. 13, 1996 at 8:30 PM. The series was moved to Monday at 8:30 PM in March 1997 and relocated to Monday at 9:00 PM in September 1998 where it has flourished as a top 10 program.

After 210 episodes, the series signs off as television's most watched comedy, averaging 17.1 million viewers.

That's what I thought "Seinfeld" would do. Just have a simple finale. It was a show about nothing, so have a "nothing" finale. However, they went the other route. I haven't seen any episodes of Raymond this season, since I bowl in a league on Mondays. However, I'll buy the season when it comes out, years from now. I'll tape the final episode, though.

I kind of like the idea of a half-hour episode. "The Odd Couple" pulled off a half-hour finale and it's one of my all-time favorite finales.

A half hour finale is a good idea. It's
been a top notch show but it seems time
to wind it up. Peter Boyle's health has
become more frail to the point where it
seems they're pushing their luck. No spinoff either. If Phil Rosenthal, and Ray, have the
sense to end the show at pretty much full
strength, what would be the sense in
carrying on with a second rate version
with most of the cast gone? It had a
great run.

Ray's mom and dad and ray himself have really aged. It is time to say adios. Ray looks especially rough this season; I don't care for his longer hair. And ray's parents (i.e., the actors--whatever their names are--) must just be busting their butts to act/perform at their ages!!!

Wow, Im a new viewer .... just got the first season DVD and watched it in its entirety. Just got the 2nd season and haven't watched yet. But still shocked at the news. I suppose on the upside I get to watch all 9 years for the first time as their DVDs are released, but still kinda sad
