Default Question about Nero (the CD Burner)

I'm trying to make a VCD. I did one today already and it worked fine. But this other one...it starts up with the message "Encoding video", then one second later it says "C:/My Documants..." blah blah blah. It won't do anything. Anyone have any idea why?

the "blah blah blah" MIGHT be important, but I'll bet that there's either a problem with one of the files or - more likely - the temp files from the first VCD you made are taking up all the space it needs to encode the file. Try deleting your temp files (I dont remember where Nero defaults to put the temp file, I think it depends on what type of installation it is) and rebooting.

Here's what it's telling me. Now it just won't burn anything at all. I unplugged it, rebooted several times, cleaned up the computer...I'm about ready to drop kick it.

unplugged? - is this an external cd writer?

what file format is the file? can you try copy or move the file to a different location on the hard drive? can you play the file in WMP?

can you create a data disk, or write ANY cd's now?

if you go to the device manager (enter devmgmt.msc into the Run command), does it show any driver problems? (any exclamation points or red X's) - if you look at the properties for the Secondary IDE channel (click on the "+" beside IDE/ATA controllers section, right-click on the secondary channel, click on properties) does it show any problems? - click on the advanced tab, is it using PIO mode or DMA ?

what is the exact error message you are getting (if any)?

Yes, it is external.

It's .avi. I did move it and it still did nothing. Yes, it plays perfect in WMP.

Nope, no problems showing and DMA.

The one I made yesterday recorded with no sound, yet on the computer it plays fine. Would that indicate a problem with the burner itself?

I'll try to put it on a CD+RW and see how it plays on my laptop. Or if it burns at all.

i think that you need to convert the file from .avi to a mpeg, there's a free program here that should work. (that whole site is an excellent resource for anything DVD or VCD related)

hopefully that's what it is, if not, check in the Device Manager to see if there are any problems with the USB drivers, make sure you go to the View menu and select "Show hidden devices" so you can see if there are any ghost drivers stuck in there.

Ugh...I'm being so annoying. I encoded it to mpeg, which was fine. But for some reason, that didn't want to record the sound. So basically any video file I have, avi or mpeg, will only play the audio if I play it on the computer off the hard drive. The sound is there, it's just not showing up in the mpeg converter or on the disc. Nothing is wrong in the device manager, so why is this being a pain?

I just found a help section on audio. I'll see if that works.

Well, it looked like it worked, changing the audio to a wav file. If I hadn't ruined all my CD-r's, I'd test.
