Taking his wife with him to a job interview-lol And had the nerve to get mad when she was offered the job.

Money is money, no matter who's making it. He should have been glad somebody was helping him pull weight.

I guess that's why Florida on Maude didn't match up with Florida on GT. James was very old fashioned and didn't want his wife to work.

You were right about James being old Fashioned. I mean, he wouldn't even let Florida go to school to get her diploma. He only wanted her to stay at home- no job , no nothing! I thought that Florida had her say about this matter in "Florida Flips" and I thought that James would be for it after that episode. Florida did have a point. There was a whole world beyond the ghetto apartment and it wasn't fair that the kids and James are experiencing new jobs, new discoveries and feelings and she is left standing in the dust. Florida just wanted to be more than just a wife, mother, housekeeper and nursemaid, which was what James restricted her activities to. Old Fashioned? Try sexist.

I did not pick up that James did not want Florida to work, simply because he was bull-headed and chauvenistic, even though he could be, at times. I picked it up that he just took pride in the fact that his wife did not have to go out, and hustle, he felt as a man, he should do that, for the most part. On the other hand, there was a time, if I remember correctly, Florida wanted to go to school, and when she did start, James kept yapping about all the stuff that was not getting done around the house, but he eventually relented, and understood, Florida needed her high school diploma.

It was the time. In today's world it is accepted. Who are we to say how somebody should or shouldn't react to certain situations. It is TV. If he was happy for her then what? They all live happily ever after? |
