Did he have one? If so, in which year? Why? What did he do? How does Laura respond to it?

I agree, Lolac,
But what else was left for him to do? Laura is so young and beautiful, he didn't need the 19 year-old girlfriends !Steve |

In 1970 Rob moved to Arizona and became a talk show host.

I agree the motorcyle was a clue, and so was the Tarantula. But Rob was a lot older than Laura...as he got older and she still stayed young and cute, would he have tried, oh...I don't know...dying his OWN hair! Working out at the gym?

At first, I didn't think Rob ever came close to
to a mid-life crisis simply because he was a little too young when the series ended and he was married to the best wife ever on TV. So he won't have gathered too much sympathy even if he did. But mentioning the motorcycle and Tarantula reminds me when of something that was an almost mid-life panic and things slipping away with age. That's when he thought he was losing his hair. That was a real panic. Like Rob said, "it's a turning point for a man." And it is a panic of youth slipping away like a mid-life crisis. But other than that I don't think Rob would have ever had one because he didn't really miss out on anything. He had it all. In fact, compared to him, he probably helped inspire it for more than a few others when they looked at how good Rob had it for himself. Rob had it easy. I think in that marriage things might have been reversed. I think Laura might have had a tougher time dealing with mid-life. Just like maybe Mary herself. I remember her saying she always worried when fans came up to her and were maybe looking at her critically that she wasn't as young as they remembered and were maybe disappointed. We should all have it as easy as Rob. But that's part of the fantasy too. |

Thanks very much, Nora. And I agree, Steve.
I was listening to a radio show maybe three or four years ago and they were talking about a charity event they had all gone to and and were bragging at how the fella who did the comedy voices on their show did his stand-up act with all his best bits and how he was just the hit of the evening. But they said the biggest highlight for him was that Mary Tyler Moore was there and asked if he might stop by so she could tell him how much she enjoyed his act. They said he was so excited he was just about jumping over chairs to get to Mary's table...And it just struck me how amazingly strong Mary's appeal is after even all these years. So I don't think anyone is disappointed either. It seems that as far as Rob and Laura and Dick and Mary are concerned they'll always seem to stay basically the same to us. And their ages don't seem to really matter. |
