Helen and Joe - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Hi all, recently I have started to watch Wings on N@N and a few times on TV Land.
Maybe this was discussed before...
I find the show very likable and enjoyable, but does it seem to anyone else that Helen turned a bit snobbish or bitchy rather after she started to date/marry Joe?

I really liked her character when I first started to watch but lately she just seems to be quite pushy and bossy with a bit more of an attitude then I am used to seeing her with.

Interesting observation, and I do agree with you to a point. Actually, I liked Helen the LEAST when she was dating Davis Lynch...all of that "fast lane" jet-setting sort of went to her head and made her less of "Our Helen" than usual.

Of course, once she became engaged and married to Joe, Helen DID become more self-confident. A lot of her early problems stemmed from her thinking that she was the "fat girl who couldn't get a man"....Becoming Mrs. Joe Hackett put a stop to that way of thinking.

Something to remember too...BOTH Helen and Joe changed a LOT after their marriage. Helen may have become more of a bossy wife, but Joe was a LOT less considerate and romantic towards Helen than he was before their marriage....

When they were dating, he remembered anniversaries of their first date, first kiss, etc.....but AFTER their marriage, he sort of turned into a young Fred Mertz. Helen would beg him to take her out on Valentine's Day and other occassions, and Joe would complain about how expensive dining out was, and he'd try to take the cheap way out by staying home and watching TV.

Joe and Helen may have still LOOKED great after their marriage, but being married certainly changed them in other ways....and not necessarily for the better!

I also think Joe and Helen really changed for the worse after they got married. At times, they were like the "Smart, Sexy Wife with the Dumb, Inconsiderate Husband" couples that seem to plague sitcoms about married couples now.

Yeah, only Joe didn't have as big a gut as those other sitcom husbands have!

I don't know.... I love Joe and Helen no matter what... While there romance did die down, I still loved them.... Espically in the Series Finale.... So cute....

I think the thing about Helen and Joe is that they lost their friendship after they got married. In the beginning, they were like childhood sweethearts, but once they got engaged and later married, that aspect of their relationship was lost.

And, about Helen dating Davis, I've never been able to understand what on earth she ever saw in him, especially when he kept breaking dates with her. Maybe she was just doing to make Joe jealous (which it certainly did hehe!). That's the only reason I can think of.

My answer to the question is very boring, but given the fact that this is a TELEVISION SHOW and not real life, it makes perfect sense.

In so many sitcoms, the main characters lose their sexual tension by finally sleeping together and/or getting married, so the writers have to do SOMETHING to keep the show entertaining. Playing up Joe's neuroses and annoying habits (for example) is one way of doing that. Once they've lost the element of sexual tension, the writers cannot write the same storylines for Helen and Joe that they did when they were just friends.

Brian and Casey slept together, but they were never meant to settle down together and the writers could continue with storylines that dealt with their dating careers and the funny incidents that occur. But married characters are harder to write when they haven't been married throughout the life of the show.
